Off Roading Missing Steve St. Laurent on the dunes

Competition Sled Pull, PA Friday, July 30th & Sat, 31th

Last weekend myself and my cousin were on our way back to our campground, near Lake Geroge NY, when a new crew cab swb 2500 hemi next to him in his duramax started blipping the throttle and he yelled to him its got a hemi. Visually he had duals, and it sounded good, but probably not much else. At the light my cousin dusted that hemi BAD with is 110hp dyno dominator,4" exhaust/Afe stage 2,ed crew cab dmax. It wasnt even close. They ran twice from a roll, the outcome was the same. Dmax pulled nicely both times. I pulled up next to him next and he starts giving me the thumbs up and revving at me. Beings im in traffic i dont want to kill any one behind me with smoke,so i let him get the lead on me for about 2-3 seconds as i rolled gently into the throttle to get some boost,by the time i built 15psi he was almost 1 1/2 trucks in front of me,when i hit 15psi, i dropped the hammer with the comp on 5x5. At 15psi i only get a quick whiff of smoke and im gone. Well i reeled that hemi in like he turned off his key. I think he was a little upset, all these hemi commercials had him thumping his chest. I pulled even with him, then 4+_ lenths more on him in under 6 seconds. He was not a happy camper, but still gave the thumbs up. It was a good laugh for both of us,and a little humbling for him im sure.

Good job snowman. Let em know who's boss. My brother has a 04' hemi. Once we ran he was ready to trade it. And it only has 4100 miles. lol!:D

Bob,it was priceless:D . you should have seen his look when my twins lit, all you heard were the tires protesting slightly from about 30 mph,and the sweet sound of the PDR twins and 5" exhaust all blasting in his open window.

Damn John you need to be a journalist, I could visualize that ass whoopin! I'm going to keep you in mind for an upcoming magazine that is looking for writers!

John. Thanks for sharing.

I had a run-in with a hemi today on the way home from work. It was an extended cab short bed 1500. He had "350hp" stickers right above where they have the word hemi on the front quarter panels. Then, on the windshield in huge letters was "HEMI. " It stretched all the way accross the top. He really thought he had something.

Anyway, we were going about 60mph down the highway. I saw the opportunity, so turned off o/d in anticipation. When I pulled up next to him I looked over. He then laughed at me and floored it, all at the same time. I dropped my right foot when i heard his truck downshift. He was not happy as i walked away from him. To bad i didn't have a way of telling him my injection pump is failing and I'm almost a full second off of my old 1/4 mile times. Of course that may have been a little too much for him to handle. He was upset as it was, although he did wave when i got off at my exit. Of course i waved back. :D

Not as much fun as Poughkeepsie (sp?)... but still a good time.

Later,

Chris

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves, taking advantage of those poor gassers who still buy into the stereotype of the slow, smokey diesel. Well, one out of two makes 'em half right.

Yeah, John, what EMcbride said. I'm looking forward to some good reading when that mag hits the stands.

Not all of us buy into that stereotype. We just don't necessarily need to spend the extra 10 grand on a truck with a Cummins in it. With that said, how much extra have you guys spent BOMBing your Cummins so it could touch a Hemi, because a stock Cummins won't? And yes, I have driven the new ones, for comparison.

I don't know much about the Hemi gassers, but for the most part, pound for pound, gassers in general will not pull with the Cummins. They run fairly good at low elevation, but at 6,000 feet where I live, they better stay in the slow lane. I was a Big Block gasser fan for years till the Cummins came out and still have two older Ford pickups, one with a 427, one with a 428. They are both fun to drive and play with, but for brute power, they will not run with my Cummins powered pickups. Stock Hemi's have about 375 ft lbs of torque. Stock Cummins have 500-600. The Cummins has between 280-350 ft lbs of torque at clutch engagement rpm, depending on the year. The numbers tell the story:) .

"IF IT AIN'T CUMMINS POWERED, IT AINT A TRUCK"

I had a Hemi powered 2500 truck follow me off the highway exit. We got to a light and turned right and merged into another highway. He was following me the whole time tailgating unitil we got ready to merge into another highway. I stayed in the right lane, he got into the left lane thinking he had a chance. I left him about 6 truck lengths as I let off the throttle at 100. My comp box was on 1x3. He did manage to give the thumbs up.

Those Hemis are some real dogs.

FX4

Ever since I've bombed my 12 valve i have been looking for anyone to race... but no... ... can never get them to run.....

Well, last night I let my 19 yo brother take my truck to go and pick up my sister... ... ... the rest is his story--------

This brand new FX4 pulls up along side and the 2 fellows in it are hootin' and hollerin' and slapping the sides of their Ferd like its a horse just beggin to run, so my bro' unleashes the Cummins on 'em... 4 times in row... from like 30 mph on up. "The smoke was so thick, all you could see was headlights, looked like they were in a mudhole" Well, they pull over to the circle K and they say something about their automatic and shifting wrong "lets find a stoplight" and then pulls out WOT (trying to get a jump, trying something to save face)... so my truck is a couple truck-lenghts behind when brother stomps it,, immediately passes the Ferd with its window down and puts so much soot in the cab that they actually see it pouring out the passenger side window of the FX4:D

Needless to say, I was awful proud, but a bit jealous. The only real run I have had was against my Pop's Z-71 (had to humble the ole man)---------------just wait til the 370s and twinsOo.

My only experience with a hemi was when I passed one on a hill, in the mtns. His 5er looked the same size as mine. Needless to say, there was no comparison - like a train passing a cow! I told my wife - I'd be pretty pi$$ed if that were me with that new hemi! Craig

I've got a bud with a 97' dually that I've tweaked a little to about 500 and he got in a race with some new Dodge the other day, don't know what it was for sure, it was either a Hemi or a SRT but as Chuck was barely passing it the guy looks over and what does he see..... Chuck still dragging his 18 ft empty car trailer :p

Hey John or anyone else, if you come up to Lake George again let me know and I'll bring by some beer, I'm only a few miles from the village.

Hehehe okay i have read enough LOL... As we all know us cummins owners have what i refer to as a Mule, will pull, haul, run, and cheaper on the oats than anything in the stable (Jmo). For those other guys its nice to have a flashy horse in the stable but how many will they go through while our mule keeps pulling, hauling and running.

I also have a gasser myself, Im impartial to mustangs(older style) but for fun and pure brute force i love my Cummins.

Why do they cry?

I get a kick out of the gassers as well... ...

My question is, Why do they cry about it. They say we spend umpteen thousands of dollars to modify our trucks just so we can beat the Hemi or the PoS Ford. Granted some of the guys here have spent that much (I am jealous) But, I got my comp off Ebay for 220 and that is my only real performance upgrade and I still stomp on the Hemi and most of the others around here.

They need to understand that we can spend $500 and get 10 times the power they can get. Besides, its not a true HEMI. Just a name that they reused for sales.

On another note. I have injectors on the way, Anyone in Utah want to help me put them in? Never done it myself.

Well said, WyattEarp. My properly valved, P-7100 pumped, Cummins will be in my stable for a very long time. When I need a workhorse, it's there. By the way, I also have a '66 Mustang and a '67 Cougar in the stable.

Besides, its not a true HEMI.

RussW1911,

Not sure I'd tell Lee Iacocca that. This engine does have hemispherical combustion chambers, and from what I've read the heads are capable of flowing enough air for a 600 hp engine without any work.
