I was having problems with my 2005 cummins when it was idleing, so I took it into Dodge to have it looked at. They tell me that there is a problem with AT LEAST 1 injector, but to find out if there are problems with other, they need to replace the one they know is bad. The problem with this is that it is a STAR part and they cannot tell me how long it will be until they get a new one, and it is up chrysler to release the part. Has anyone else had this problem or are there any horror stories that go with this? Anyone have to wait a long time for the injector? I am currently renting a car, a friggin taurus, and I want my truck back!!

when i start the truck, or when i run stop and go, it has a very rough idle. After running freeway speeds and then i stop, it runs normal until after a few minutes of ideling then it runs rough again... . plus my exhaust smells rich

3 weaks ago I had a injector stick open, fill the crankcase with fuel and coat the underside of my truck with oil, and the cars behind me. The dealer got a new injector one day after they found the problem. I do not know why STAR would not have any injectors.

Kinda sounds like when my FCA took a dump, does your idle "dance" back and forth when this occurs?

I noticed in your other thread you made reference to the mods on your truck, including the BDTD. Possibly that's why Star is involved. The dealer may have dropped a dime about your mods.

The reason they brought STAR up is that the tech HAS to diagnose and find the bad injector. The injectors and a few other electrical components are on restriction and have to be ordered straight from the tech with a VIN#, Repair Order #, customer complaint then the tech has to call STAR and tell them everything he did and which injector is bad. Then STAR releases the injector and the tech can ONLY order 1 at a time. Every tech I know thinks it is pain in the arse to deal with especially if there is more than 1 bad injector.

I would expect that cummins carries them also? Would have to be a heck of a lot cheeper then dodge parts. Keep in mine that cummins has the power masters club that gives you 10% off.

Use to be once STAR is on the phone and they release a injector(or any part on restiction) it showed up in less then 48 hours as a rule.

That seemed to be my experience 3 weeks ago.

the dealership service department does not work this weekend, but the injector will be in this monday, and I will have my truck back monday afternoon or tuesday morning... . the good news is dodge will cover my warranty, so the only costs I have is the rental P. O. S.

Make sure that one injector is all that is bad. I had an 04. 5 that had six that were leaking & STAR only wanted to replace the worst three. The dealer said that getting more than one at a time was very difficult (also tried telling me that the injectors were $700 each). After much discussion it was decided that all six would be replaced. Oh yeah they came in two separate shipments of three, not all six at once. i think it took about three or four days to get all of them.

I asked the dealer if they could tell if any others needed replacement, and they said they wont know for sure until they get the one that they know is bad replaced. I also asked them to have enough injectors shipped to replace all if necessary, and like you mentioned, they said that chyrsler could not release all of them, and that they would have to do one at a time... each injector is $500!!! what a bunch of BS. I am glad that my warranty is covering this repair. Once I get the truck back, I am thinking about upgrading all of the injectors though.

My brother has a similar problem, except the truck (2003) is out of warrantee, so this one's on him. His truck is smoking white/grey at idle. Consensus is leaking (dribbling) injector. How does one test and determine which one(s) are bad? Also, what's the best alternative when it comes to purchasing replacements? All the hot-rod injector companys want cores, but my guess is at least some of his cores are no good? Are the remans just as good as new? His stock ones only lasted 125K. This next set needs to at least meet or exceed the current ones in terms of life cycle.

Any ideas?

Mine has done that "dance" since new... is that a symptom of a bad FCA?

FCA's are pretty cheap, at Cummins, under $100. DC wanted almost $300. Back in Sept. Cummins quoted $460 per injector, new, I think.

It is true that dealer techs cant just order up new injectors like a new set of spark plugs. Once the ok is given by Star the parts get there quick, its getting the OK that seems to be tough. Interestingly, Star is far more relaxed about giving the ok for Cp3's.
