I agree on the 'UGH' factor. Who the hell wants 80% less music. If I had that I would have to turn on the radio for entertainment while driving :D . I also don't agree about the driver fatigue statment. Personally, I never get tired of listenening to the mighty Cummins. Bet all the new colors will be earth tones as well  .

The Cummins is quite in our trucks. They are much louder in the less insulated buses ETC. I don't get tired of the noise either.

So the cummins I guess is going to be like the duratick. You will actualy have to listed to see if its a diesel. Where the ISB puts it up front and on the table ;)

:p I wonder if they did any surveys to find out whether people actually wanter quieter... . or did they just listen to the tree-hugger types... . and therefore quieter MUST be better.

Man are you right

Ray - you are so right - the marketing idiot's have ran away with it - we need to start a poll whether we want a quiet diesel? How do we do that on the TDR?

Virtually EVERYTHING about the "new ISB" is about pleasing EPA and environmentalists! *I* have no special love for noisy engines, when that noise doesn't fit a PURPOSE and design benefit... The traditional diesel clatter hes been ever-present as part of design parameters peculiar to diesels due to their compression and other issues that have long allowed economical operation coupled with long term reliability and durability. It's NOT just noise for noises' sake!

The guys over in the GM group have already gleefully pointed to the above ISB info, and are slapping each other on the back concerning Cummins "copying" the common-rail concept of fuel delivery as currently employed in their Duramaxes - totally IGNORANT that Clessie Cummins developed that concept MANY years ago at nearly the same time he was developing the Cummins and diesel power - so WHO is copying WHO? :p

As far as lowering engine noise by moving engine geartrain to the REAR of the engine - what a concept - and what a NIGHTMARE if/when service is required in those items and areas! What FUN it will be to have to REMOVE the engine to get at the camshaft or cam gears...

I could go on and on, but virtually EVERY "advance" in the wondrous new ISB is NOT about actually IMPROVING the engine in terms of power or reliability - but merely an attempt towards political correctness and appeasing the EPA...

It's a sad thing to see... :(

VGT

Hmm. I wonder if we can 'upgrade' to a variable geometry turbocharger in our trucks. Anyone know about the VGT's? The Cummins press release also mentioned some additional engine electronics required to use the VGT.

From what I've read about the VGT's, they seem to solve allot of the problems of choosing between low RPM boost or a better top-end boost.

And what about the common rail injection system? Anyone familiar with this setup? The Cummins press release mentioned better responsiveness over the RPM range (especially low end) and a 2% increase in MPG. Is there an aftermarket upgrade available? ... ... .

less noise??

I would rather the new ISB sound like the old ISB. I read this one on the TDR the other day... If it purrs like a kitten it problably runs like a P***Y.

;) I think you need to "Post a New Message" and the poll choice is there among the selections on that screen.
