I was reading somewhere that Dodge is changing suppliers for the manual gearboxes starting soon. Has anyone else heard of this????

yea it been out for awhile now there is a huge link somewhere around do a search

it a getrag t56 or s/m like that aluminum case :(

Ford and GM use a German ZF 6spd unit. Last time I checked you could only get the 590 ft lbs DM with an auto, so I'm wondering what that says about thier comfort level with the ZF.

So are the getrags not as good as the sixes that are in there now? I know they have been around for quite awhile in other applications. Just wondering because a few years down the road I want to upgrade to another ctd but was leaning towards a manual next time.

In all fairness, I don't think anyone knows how the G56 Getrags will hold up in the new trucks, but if I were buying one today I'd make sure it had the NV-5600 as it has proven to be an extremely durable transmission. Luckily I bought two new NV-5600 equipped trucks in the last 12mo, so I'm good for a bit ;)

yes i feel the same way. time will tell on the getdrag 6 sp.

Gfrance-- the 1st gen trucks had a getdrag 5 sp , lots of problems with them behind a weeker tuned engine, in stock form of course.

the N V 5600 is proven to be strong even in trucks that are heavily bombed. I ordered an 05 as soon as I heard about the change.

I friend of mine drove a 6 sp in a jeep limited and said the shifting was smooth as glass

I don't know if it is the same getdrag that their putting in the trucks.

if it is that may be some of the reason for the change .

Although there have been sporadic complaints of notchy shifting, etc. with the NV-5600 (mostly due to unrealistic expectations for such a HD transmission), I believe that DC's divesting itself of New Venture shares is the reason for the transmission change. Purely economic in my mind. Don't forget, us TDR guys are among the very small percentage of people that know or even care what brand of 6 spd is in our trucks. Most buyers will remain blissfully ignorant that there ever was a NV-5600 (as will most salesmen).

Yea thats a pretty sure statement there. Thanks for the feed back. If I didn't have so much already invested in this truck I would have traded for a 3500 dually. I never would have thought I'd be towing over the ratings of my 2500. Think I'll just hold out for a few more yrs then get the dually w/ six & keep the 01 for the daily driver & trade in the Toyota Tacoma. :D

back when I was shopping for my 98 , I was disappointed with all the salesmen that knew allmost nothing about diesels . very tough to make a dicission on a truck when the person selling can't answer your question , or worst tries to bulls**t you .

I luckily found the right salesmen and the TDR all at the same time .

the dealer ended up being very good to me in the longrun,so I went back for my 05

When I bought my '01. 5, I was looking at all the trucks on the lot and realized that some had rear brakes and some didn't. Naturally, I assumed it was an option so I told my salesman that I wanted the optional rear disk brakes. I recieved a blank stare. Nobody at the dealership even knew they had switched to rear disks. This was my pre-TDR days (the dark ages, if you will ;)) but I finally managed to piece it together along with most of the other mid-year changes. At that point I considered my salesman to be nothing more than a price negotiator as it was painfully obvious that he knew very little about his product. Unfortunately this level of product knowledge is the rule rather than the exception. If you find a knowledgeable salesman, hang on to him.

It has'nt changed any at my dealership since I bought my 2001. 5 new. I was talking to the salseman yesterday that I've bought 2 vehicles from & asking about the 2005 & the 10lbs of extra torque. He did'nt know they even upped it. Like you said they are just # crunchers.

My '05 owner's manual makes reference in the Maintenance schedules to changing the fluid in the 6 speed and in parenthesis it has (G56). Sounds like they are preparing for the G56 if the first '05s don't already have them. Guess I need to crawl under there and look! :D

I'm just guessing, but since the NV-5600 was identified by the code DEE, I would suspect that they will either keep the same code (logic being it identifies a 6 spd transmission) or will change the code to some other Chrysler 3 letter code.

Dave

rashwor,

Which transmission is in your 05'? Getrag or NV5600. I am awaiting my 05' dually which i ordered last month and am wondering what 6 spd i'll get.

thanks

How can the new series tranmission (Getrag) be visually identified??

It will be an aluminum case rather than cast iron,

I just took delivery of my 05 which was ordered in August It has the NV 5600,

In the past most changes are made in the half yr. trucks 03. 5 , 04. 5 , 05. 5 .

I'm sure the first TDR member that gets one will let us know right here.

The 05 Jeeps have a new 6 sp. but don't know if it the getdrag or not.
