I have a 99 regular cab, 2500 8 ft. box, automatic transmission, 410 gears, SLT Laramie with leather that I ordered new. My truck is completely stock expect for a 4 in. Stainless exhaust and a K&N air filter. I have only 78,000 miles on it and very, very rarely tow heavy loads. My problem started a couple of months ago when I start it up after sitting all night or after an 8 hour shift at work, it blows blue smoke until I start driving, and then it goes away. I have been running home heating oil for many years in it without any problem. I have used Chevron motor oil since new. I add Amsoil C Tain boost all the time and Anti-winter additive in the fuel drum when it's cold. TO me, it almost sounds like a valve seal problem (Is this possible so soon?). I pretty much only travel a total of 30 miles a day, winter and summer, and an occasional long trip so that i know that my engine in the winter months doesn't get hot enough. It seems that on some days, it is worse than others. It also seems like it loads up sometimes after starting and I have to give it a little pedal to clear it out. Once I'm driving, it runs like the day I drove it off the lot.

I would like some advice from you knowledgable people out there about things to check for. I love this truck and plan to own it for a long time.

Thanks,

Bob M.

Bob,

Mine will somtimes puff a little blue when it sits 15 to 45 minutes between trips when the engine is warm. I never add any oil between changes and that can be up to 8 or 9 thousand miles so I don't worry about it. Did you have the head redone when the engine was rebuilt? If not the valve seals could be leaking but usually after 8 to 12 hours any oil would seep past the rings into the crankcase.

try a good injector cleaner, or even remove and clean them. also be sure the K&N isnt filling the intake /turbo with oil.

Thanks for your quick replies George And D Creed. I have never had the head off my engine or even the valve cover off yet. Is there a good brand name as far as injecter cleaner goes that I can try? If so where can I buy it from? Could running the home heating oil for so long now be giving me my problem?

Thanks Again

Bob M.

I don't know about the home heating oil issue. But I do agree that running some injector cleaner could not hurt. You might try running diesel in it at the same time - or maybe before you try an additive. If it clears up with just diesel, at least you can blame the heating oil. I like Power Services products as far as additives go.

Also, aren't these engines supposed to have their valves adjusted at about 75K?

I would like to thank you people for your info. I will try the Power Services injector cleaner this week. John C. I want to say thanks for your info also because I am an honest guy and don't like doing things illegal. When I do my next oil change I plan on checking my valves and seals.

100k is recommended valve adj. I did mine @ just over 100 and they were so close I couldn't beleive it. As far as the blue smoke . . . oil - I'd guess you may have a restricted oil return form the turbo, check for kinks or a colapsed hose on the retun tube, and/or a leaky turbo shaft oil seal. Worth looking at instead of throwin snake oil at it.

As for using the home heating oil, it's the same stuff (#2 oil) with a dye added so the troopers can easilly pick it out from the clear over the road, or now days the green over the road. Other than that home heating probably has the desireable amount of sulfer our trucks like, versus the new low sulfer pump crap we're paying more than high test for, go figure that one out? Less refining = higher resale cost#@$%! Rat Bas_ards. When I got my truck diesel was $. 89/gallon and high test was like $1. 36, now high test is $3. 05 and I saw diesel in Philly @ $3. 99:{#@$%! I'm sure all of us received compensatory pay increases huh? Or better yet I'm sure we'll receive a tax break from Uncle Sam Argggghhhh!!!!! Sorry . . . .
