I've started getting a noise in either the clutch or trans. When I let the clutch out in neutral while stopped, it sounds like a fairly loud rattle. If I push the clutch in, it stops after the trans quits turning. Cruising around, I can hear the noise, but if I push in the clutch while I'm still rolling, it also stops.

I let the dealer listen to it and he said that its for sure the throw out bearing and that I should leave it alone until it gets worse. That sounds backwards to me. If it was the throw out bearing, wouldn't it make the noise with the clutch disengaged? I'm wondering if it isn't more likely the trans.

Thanks for any suggestions

How many miles do you have on the truck? Also, I think your year is a dual mass flyweel clutch. If I am right those clutches have all kinds of noise issues. I would try giving the guys at Southbend a call and ask their opinion. When my clutch failed it whent pretty quick so you may know soon what the problem is.

I've only got 60K mi. w/stock hp. I do tow a heavy 5ver tho. I'll give SB a call. What I was looking for is how to tell if the noise is the clutch or the trans.

I had a 06 6 spd too and I had the throwout and pilot bearing replaced under warranty. It made a terrible rattle when I pushed the clutch in. I would for sure get a SB with solid flywheel and be done with it.

John,

I have the same noise you describe and its gotten worse the last few two times I pulled our fiver. I am also stock (76K miles). I was wondering the same thing - clutch or transmission?

Scooby, I just talked to SB and they said that my getting 60K mi. on the stock clutch was really pretty good and that a lot of guys only get around 30K. He said that the noise is from the DM flywheel. They begin to wooble and make that noise.

So now I'm wondering whether to go with a CON O or a CON oFe clutch. He said that I'd prob be fine with the CON O if I didn't go much beyond 400hp. However I'd like a little safety margin that the CON oFe would give esp. since I tow heavy from time to time. I plan on getting a Smarty Jr.

Thanks for the info - they don't have a buy one get one free deal going on now do they that we can go in on together?? :) What is the difference in terms of price, and pedal feel between the two. I'll likely stay mostly stock... . although like you I like the added margin of safety.

Boy I wish they had some kind of 2 fer deal. They quoted $1125 for the con 0 and $1325 for the con ofe. I had the ofe in my '97 truck and it wasn't bad at all. It had a little more grab than stock, but nothing significant.
I had a trip planned with my 5th whl in Jan, but now I don't think I should two until I get this fixed.
