Code 0713 ( Decreased Engine Performance Due to Overheating Condition) was found using the ign. key deal last thursday after trans would not shift into 2nd by itself. I believe I have corrected the trans issue.

Discovered the batteries were almost dead when I cleaned the terminals.

They have been replaced. I also replaced the thermostat and found the rubber insulator had come apart. Thinking this was the reason for the 0713 code. I have never over heated, I've had engine coolant temp up to 230 -240 But never higher.

After replacing the thermostat, the gauge shows 180 ish. No higher than 190 pulling my (3500lbs. gross) trailer full of mowers, up our Middle Tenn. hills.

Now I noticed the factory volt gauge shows about 12v before I start the motor, and 14v after it starts. It seems to always stay near 14v.

Truck starts quicker and trans is shifting perfect. I have not noticed any decreased performance from the motor.

I have relocated the oil breather bottle years ago, so it is not messing up the radiator. I clean the radiator fins at least once a month. It was not that dirty, but I cleaned them again today.

So what or where do I look next ???

Sounds like you have nothing to worry about. That code could be old.

I'd clear the code with a code scanner and periodically check for a reoccurrence.

Ok thanks Landry. Is there a way to clear the code without a scanner ?

I guess I could go to an auto parts store and have them clear all codes.

You have helped me a bunch. I really appreciate it

Usually just disconnecting both batteries for a few hours (or overnight) will do it. Some suggest turning on the headlights after disconnecting the batteries will speed up the process. When you reconnect the batteries, be sure and reset your APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor) by turning on the ignition key without starting the engine, then slowly push the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor, slowly release it, then turn off the ignition.

Any auto parts store would be able to clear it also with their code scanner, but if you run over to a Wal-Mart or Harbor Freight Tools, you can usually pick up a code scanner for about $40.

You're most welcome. I'm glad the truck repairs are working out well for you.
