Bob do you see anything different with the new SCR,was it a design change on the inside of the SCR like material used design change. What is retail at your store on that part. Also was the SCR re-flash from Cummins. Or do you think it was Ram engineering or a collective approach.Do you have any details as to what the PCM programming change was.People I talked with in L.A. said that the PCM flash was for the dosing triggering event during high Nox emission events. This only occured when the Cummins 6.7L was not fully warmed up.Some say that the dosing event during cold engine driving was flooding the SCR and ruining the interior walls of the SCR.Many noticed a flood of water coming from the b-clamp to the muffler.Which people throught it was just moisture do to the temp difference outside verus inside the muffler system. Thoughts

This might explain the ammonia smell and white poweder people have been seeing (accumulating) in/atound their exhaust pipes.

I was getting occasional CELs when the exhaust was warm, but engine not quite hot yet. They would always go away after driving full heated up.

The white residue is at the def injector or anywhere in the def plumbing and fittings should be repaired-signs of leaks

I was also thinking that the 32-33% urea solution (DEF) can be corrosive to some metals if it sits on them for some time and when everything gets several hundred degrees. Not too corrosive to stainless steel. But depending on the welds (and metals used in the welds(, overdosing of DEF could cause some problems at the welds. This might help explain why overdosing could cause a leak.

If you have already had the new style scr cat installed your vin will not be on the list.We have had an easy time getting the scr cats for a good while now.

My truck threw P20EE? codes repeatedly through three or four dealer visits until they finally replaced the Cat early this year. I still got a recall notice in the mail last week. How would I tell if I have the "new style" cat?

Thanks,

Al

1) Check manufacture date on drivers side door sticker. If manufactured after Oct 3rd, 2013, you're fine.

2) If manufactured before Oct 3rd, 2013, look at the paperwork they gave you when they replaced the SCR cat. It should say both "Replaced SCR Cat" & "Removed Ammonia Sensor". It will also likely say reprogramed PCM or reflashed.

3) If still unsure, take it in with your recall card for a looksie.

Took my truck in yesterday for the S87 recall. They replaced the SCR Cat and did 4 flashes. One was for the PCM which was part of the cat replacement and the other 3 were for the ABS, RFH and the ITBM. Didn't have a clue what RFH and ITBM stood for but Google shows it as the RF Hub and the Integrated Trailer Braking Module, I did notice that the truck seems to have a smoother shift.

Have a great weekend.....Don

Well, it took all day, but the ticket I got said they inspected the Cat and there was no ammonia sensor so the cat replacement I got last year took care of the recall. I'm glad because the truck has been flawless (w.r.t. DEF, anyway) since the cat was replaced.

I had to go to dealer today due to my truck wouldn't start, acted like a dead battery sort of, when i pushed the button, the starter would engage, but no crank, I also lost the entire evic screen, nothing would work, kept trying and finally it started, I drove straight to the dealer, and after 2 hrs, the said the PCM and ACM, had to reprogram them, i don't know why???? they checked and tested the battery and charging system, all was good.
I then was hit with the same recall on the cat, so now they are ordering me one, and I will have that done. I was told that the no start may or may not have fixed it, if it happens again, replacement of PCM.
sounds like fun.

I would be surprised if they repaired your no start issue. While the pcm has a charging system improvement listed as something it addresses. The ASCM has an issue where it may trip a false code

With that in mind, It did it again this morning, but my dash didnt go black, It turned over slow, not really slow but like it was laboring to start, so i wonder if a dragging starter would cause a drop in voltage to the pcm, causing it to hickup? I have called the dealer and asked that question, i waiting for a call back right now.
Anybody had this issue i would love to know what the heck is causing this, i dont feel real warm and fuzzy not knowing whether it is going to start.

I've been having a ver simular issue since they replaced my alt. on cold starts after I let the wait to start lamps cycle when I go to start up the engine will crank very slow. It will start but I'll get strange messages on the dash. The most common one is service antilock system due. or DEF system service due. Also the radio will reset all as if the batt voltage is going too low. I had the S86 recall done yesterday and had the dealer load check the batts they said everything tested good so I'm at a loss....

Here is a list of the parts installed with the S86 recall;

4641780 Strap Tie 08015011

68085740-AA
Sensor Nitro 140290

Flash update fromold 32370031SA to new 32370031SB

Took about 5 hours to complete. I haven't had a chance to get under the truck and see just what was done nor have I had a chance to give it a good run. I hope they got it right this time....

How cold is it? Maybe your glow plugs aren't all working, or the fuel heater isn't working. Do you have a block heater? If so try plugging that in and see if it changes anything. IF it is cold enough for the glow plugs to come on, maybe the oil is thick.

The actual time to perform the recall is less than 2 hours. If you have a slow crank your dealer did not look deep enough if at all

My 2013 doesn't have glow plugs.

So this a.m., at 50* F my truck for the first time.... didn't turn over... I pressed the start button... waited the required time for the grid heat circuit... and than when the ECM engaged the starter.... it cranked no more than a fraction of a second... and sounded SLOW, but the time was so short I'm not sure.... so I'm sitting there pondering... and pushed the start button a second time... this time it ignores the cold start procedure and starts right up... this 2013 is new to me... low mileage but OE batteries... and I'm wondering if the batteries are starting to go....

Bob 4x4 or Sag 2, would love to hear your comments on this issue... as it seems to be NEW to several of us...

FYI

I also noticed a slight burning smell after the SCR cat recall was completed. Maybe the sealant they used on the new cat was making a smell? It's gone now. Just smelled for a short time when the exhaust was hot driving.

There is a combination of factors coming into play. With the colder temps even a good battery will loose some voltage, the engine will turn over harder due to oil viscosity, then you have a drop in voltage due to the heater grids.A failing battery will show up quick under these conditions. The dealers are required to have a nice Midtronix tester that should catch any battery or charging issues. From what I have been seeing lately here is somebody is dropping the ball at the dealers involved

Jim, I had a similar experience with 2013 about a month ago it ended up having a battery being bad, so I replaced both. It took to experiences before I realized it was the battery. All of my other Ram trucks batteries had lasted about 7 years so I just couldn't fathom that at 3-4 year mark my batteries were bad. After they were tested I had no questions though.
