Anyone up close familiar with Matco tools?

Jim,

Spoke to a guy here and he said since the garage is always going to be "conditioned" space it shouldn't make any difference if the inside of the walls are painted or not. (I have A/C and heat for the garage).

Do you agree or do you still think I should paint them?

He is probably right, but long term exposer to humid air in VA may lead to unfavorable issue much later. I am just old school when OSB is used.

My wood working shop which is in the basement has cement walls. These were painted white and than covered with drywall which was also painted white. There is a lot of cabinets and shelves with wood racks on the walls, but I did not want any moister issue. I even use a dehumidifier in the shop and basement area from April to November. The basement is A/C and Heated also since the furnace is down in the basement. Another benefit to the painted walls being white, is light reflection this seems to make the room brighter. This easier on my old eyes when reading scales for measurements.

OH yea - and the outlet for the circulator isn't on a GFCI.....sigh.....guess I have to do it myself.

It might have been cheaper in the long run if I took time off w/o pay to do the work and then I'd less likely develop an ulcer.

I feel your pain! We built our house from the ground up, but 25 years later when it was time to remodel the kitchen we hired an outfit to do it. Nothing but problems! They subbed out to an "electrician" (and I used the term LOOSELY) who had to run a new circuit for the fancy microwave-30 amp instead of the existing 20A. He ran the correct wire gauge, but installed a 40A breaker, never put in a single staple, just draped it over the heat ducting, stuck flex conduit into the drywall, but no electrical box, just unbelievable poor work that could have led to fire! After I spent some time in the crawl space cursing and getting filthy, I finally called the kitchen contractor. He tells me "well, the kid had worked all day before he came to your place at 3 PM." WTF does that have to do with it? He offered to send him back to fix everything, but I told him forget it, I would do it all over myself, take it off my bill. That was only one thing. They mis-measured cabinet doors and built wrong twice, installed anyway thinking maybe we wouldn't notice...hung lights in the wrong spot because they "couldn't drill thru the joist", just one thing after another. Never again. And forget BBB, if they get their dues payment that business will be rated AAA

DOESNT' ANYONE TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR WORK ANYMORE?!?!?

OK, so this isn't a shop update, it is a house update. I don't have time to do both so I hired a general contractor to do the basement remodel. Since both need to be done before we move in. The general subbed to a plumber for work. They were there yesterday to do the kitchen, bath, water heater, etc. I can do it, just don't have time. Some things looked great, others, ....welll.

The vent needs to go into the attic and tie into an outside vent. They went through a closet to get to the attic. Fine - no problem. Said they are done, but never sealed the holes so the small particles of insulation are falling onto stuff in the closet. (blown in insulation).

The kitchen sink is stainless. Instead of grey putty for the strainer, they used white. And they never even trimmed and cleaned up the putty.

Bathroom sink - installed crooked. (and sealed down - hopefully they can remove it w/o hurting the laminate top of the vanity.View attachment 125203

They installed the circulator pump I asked for - said they have done it before. I looked at it and....it is upside down. Will it work - SURE. If it leaks, the water drains into the electrical box.

Wow......

Shop looking good!!!

Another vote for a quick wall paint, the stuff is rough and every little dust particle will stick...you will have a fur ball farm..

And Jim makes a great point regarding the moisture....
We converted part of a barn to a shop space and used OSB on the walls. I got nervous every time I welded. We put metal on the walls when we built the new shop. I wonder if there is paint that would be somewhat fire retardant.

Hey Dan did the city/county housing inspectors pass this work as being acceptable? I know even back in the early 70's the electrical inspection would have failed with a water line running over the top of the electrical box in IL like that!

I would not pay them for substandard work and have the general contractor fix your issues with all of the plumbing issues. The general contractor works for you and he must satisfy you first, before being paid. Did the plumber provide you with a copy of his state license or was the license number displayed on the van for you to note. IF so, report this substandard work to the state!

The flex water lines are they for a dishwasher or what?

Both of my boy's are in the plumbing and pipefitter union her in IL. I know this would not pass inspection like that and they would not have done sloppy work like that.

Jim, the work was just done on Thursday, so nothing has been inspected.
The braided lines, one is for the icemaker the other is for the dishwasher

Here is another wonderful thing the plumbers did…
The water line that is supposed to be the return for the circulator pump is connected to The icemaker and drinking faucet.
The line that is supposed to be the feed for the icemaker and drinking faucet (from a water filter system) is attached as the return to the circulator pump.
Good thing these guys know what they’re doing!

Yes, I just created an email to the general, and to the owner of the plumbing company. Guess we’ll see next week what happens.

On the shop side of things, I got the ceiling all sealed up. Started working on installing the lights. Currently on low speed Internet so I will post pictures later.

Furball farm… Aren’t they farm cats?

Let there be light!

I thought about that too (painting to help with the light), but I don't think it will help much. I have sooooo much stuff in my current garage, and if that happens in the new one (most likely) there will not be any wall to see that will reflect light.

I hate to admit it, but here is a pic of a wall of my current garage. - since I do bodywork, painting, transmissions, engines, electrical (car, house, electronics), plumbing, welding/repairing, etc etc etc. I have a lot of .... umm...."treasures". Plus now I have whatever my Dad had in his shop that I have to do something with. I know I shouldn't get rid of that yet - I know it would hurt his feelings...

I know it is messy/crammed full - you don't have to tell me - my Dad tells me that enough already. Besides - right now, the only time I'm in the old garage is when I need to quickly fix something to work with on the new house.

It will be nice and clean once I remove everything.

If nothing else you are well educated Dan

You put my book case full of service manuals to shame. I think I'm going to show my wife, maybe she will finally concede :)

Or maybe she will just tell me to move my book case out to the garage once she sees your set up

Planning for the air compressor move. I will eventually have it outside next to the shop. However, for now it will be inside till I build the lean-to onto the shop (or at least some sort of protection for it). Figured if I mount it on some sort of rubber, that should help noise. I was thinking of using a piece of rubber floor mat used for horses since I've got several of them (mats not horses).

Also, does it NEED to be bolted down to the floor? I've never not had one bolted down, so I don't know if it will try to "walk" around.

Any recommendations?

The compressor is a Champion RV2 7.5HP unit similar to this:
https://www.kleen-ritecorp.com/p-6794-champion-80-gallon-vertical-compressor.aspx

I'll stick my other air tanks outside now - since who cares if they get wet. And since I don't care, I don't care if any neighbors care. :)
