Well ,
had the new clutch installed today, got rid of the dual mass flywheel too, This single flywheel drives soooo much smoother, and so far i don't hear ANY rollover noise, clutch is stiffer than the other but i like it,Heck i wished i'd done this changeover sooner, Monte

Check and see if you pick any harmonics at different rpms and different loads. A lot of the DMF was centered around the NVH aspect of it.

I've towed with my truck and got rid of the DMF 40,000 mi ago. No harmonics here. Hear the trans a little more. DON'T lug around in too high of a gear now as you don't have the dampening as much now as you did with the DMF.

Didn't know these had a DMF? My stroke had one and it was the biggest POS ever. Got rid of it and was much happier.

Is ditching it common place? Do it when you replace clutch?

The DMF made its appearance MY05 mid year with the G56 transmission. The older CR's did not have the DMF.

2005 early was NV5600 later was G56 w/DMF a bit confusing. I have an '05 NV5600.

One comment on the 7. 3L DMF vs. G56 DMF, made by different companies similar solutions to the issue with different approaches to the problems. The Ford DMF had about 120 individual comonents down to the rivets.

All DMF's have active moving parts and are subject to wear.

Gary... .

I've had a lot DMF in my hand... . never have I taken one apart and counted the pieces... SMILE... sitting in the desert just out of Death Valley NP... Please work hard and continue to pay my social security... .

Jim,

Hummphf. Me supporting your tastes and hobbies? Thats a tough task. You gotta be real bored to take any DMF apart, I've done 3 different designs 7. 3L, G56 and VW TDI.

OK Jim, I'm going back to work so you can fish and sightsee and whatever old retired farts do.

Take care,

Gary

Glad to hear (no pun intended) all is OK, so now I'm wondering if the so called expert I had go through my trans did something wrong. It has made noise from day one of replacement of the DMF to a SMF, especially 3rd gear, any RPM lower than 1500 it has the rollover noise or what I think is rollover noise.

Naw. I had a Valeo and now an SBC and the transmission's made noise ever since. With the DMF I could bog the crap out of the truck and not a peep. I'
m running single discs though. DD's exhibit all kinds of noises.

I've put a couple hundred miles on the new clutch and i still do NOT hear any noises, I've got to pull a trailer down to Austin on the 17th for the floods there, i'll find out how it pulls and if any noises develope then and let you know, Thnx. Monte

When my trans is cold at idle with clutch disengaged, I only hear it a little bit, but when warm it can be loud, and I've registered up to 230* oil temps. but when up to speed it sounds like it did before the conversion.

Your clutch has no effect on water temperature... the heat generated from the clutch if its slipped might damage the friction based on the style of friction on the disc... ceramic/organic/kevlar/feramic... etc... but this heat would be held in the bell housing and wouldn't migrate to the coolant...

So when your engine is warm... and the clutch is disengaged the disc and input shaft are stationary (assuming your in gear and not rolling) and there is load on the pilot bearing, release bearing and the cover... could you have a bad bearing, and that's what you hear...

Did you consider changing the pilot bearing by machining the flywheel and replacing the needle bearing with a sealed ball bearing that will better support the input shaft...

I'm reporting the Transmission Oil Temperature, and the pilot bearing is the updated bearing from SBC (Ball Bearing) that comes with the SBC SMF kit. The transmission was inspected and found to have browned bearings and were replaced by Richard, from Standard Transmission in Tucson AZ, before the transmission was re-installed. When cold, the transmission is quiet, but just idling it in Neutral will warm it up enough to make some noise. When the transmission oil temp is between 180-200*, I engage the clutch at idle, so I don't have to hear it, but you do hear the DD 3250 spinning the center plate.

I always come up to a red light or stop sign and put mine in neutral, foot off the clutch and i still do not hear any noises, I looked at my old pilot bearing after it was pulled and the old bearing still looked in good shape, even my old clutch disc looked good, the dual mass flywheel had some broken springs, clutch still worked alright ,at 124,000 miles i figured it was time to change, plus got tired of it slipping when i pushed it a little, I have a friend who has a Ford and he switched to smf and he has terrible rollover noise, but his smf and clutch has been in it for over 150,000 miles and it still pulls and works good, He doesn't worry about the noise, just irritating is all, Hope it gets better, God Bless, Monte

Thanks for your concern, I have been told its normal, but I've been a mechanic since the day my uncle gave me a screwdriver when I was 5 years old and removed every door knob in our house. :-laf The noise really bothers me, but I tell myself its was inspected by an expert and it will make noise with a SMF. There's a member here on TDR that has a fleet of G56's of all versions and routinely pulls 30K+ GCVW and has told me that they are noisier than a DMF. Its hard on the throwout bearing, engaging the clutch while idling at a stop, but I do it now to keep the noise down.

When I put a 3250 In my G56 back in 2008 it made me hate driving my truck, noisy with the clutch in, noisy with any lugging, notchy slow shifting, stiff pedal, made me not terribly sad when it got totaled. Last year one of my friends put in a 3250DD, the daily driver version with rubber snubbed on the center plate, amazing how quiet the clutch it self it. Thats on a NV4500 truck so not a direct comparison and cant compare lugging noise but I was impressed with it!

I don't think the clutch is that noisy, its the internal gears/bearings of the transmission that I'm hearing. the input shaft play was checked as well as all bearings replaced due to browning. It sounds like it has 500K miles on it and is time for replacement. I'm starting to research the possibility of replacing it with an NV5600, my 04. 5 had rollover noise while idling in gear through parking lots but thats normal. I will be towing at 23K GCVW in 30 Days, so I will know just how strong the trans and clutch are. BTW we are talking about a transmission that only has 48K miles and only 10% of its life was towing heavy.

My transmission has 124,000 miles on it and 85% of it is heavy towing, The only complaint that i have is the rear u-joint, i've replaced it twice, even put in a greasable one and it still didn't get the mileage that the original one did, The fit on it is tight too , How did your transmission sound before you replaced the DMF?Monte
