what a difference from stock!

i have had it in since Dec 31st and have been driving it under different conditions. i wanted to have some good 2nd and 3rd impressions before posting. this is my

original post on why i replaced the factory turbo.

so far:

1. it was very hard going 100 miles while taking it easy breaking it in. i kept under 10 lbs for about 50 miles (stop and go) and then under 20 lbs for the next 50. even after that i still never had it over 30 for another 50. realistically you can't stay in it beyond 3 or 4 seconds in the rain and on the wet roads we have had here all week.

2. i get the same power at lower boost than before. this is probably because there is much less restriction with this turbo.

3. the turbo whine is different, it tends to be a lower frequency at any given boost. probably because it turns slower for a given air flow. this truck sounds much more like a big rig cummins now. its a beautiful thing.

4. turbo lag seems about the same as stock. i actually hear more speed change at slow speeds (40 mph) with very minor throttle change. it seems very responsive.

5. at 70 mph cruising, i can hear my engine! it occurred to me after about 10 minutes on the highway that i wasn't hearing the turbo, just the beautiful sound of the engine. HOWEVER, if you get into it, the turbo sounds off immediately.

6. haven't had the box past 4,3. didn't have any reason to. this baby is more than adequate at 3,3 for daily "launching". i will probably ease up to higher numbers once the roads get dry and the turbo gets some more miles on it.

7. for those of you wanting to know the correct bomb order - DO THE TURBO FIRST!!!!!

8. by the way, you can hit 40 lbs boost really fast!

final thoughts:

while i did have some minor problems during installation, most of them were my fault. i did have to cut the front pipe off about 1-1/2". i couldn't push the exhaust any farther back on the hangers. other than grinding a little off the motor mount to clear the waste gate controller, this is bolt on.

thank you KYLE (KYLE4) for your help and good price.

thank you TDR for helping me make the right decision.

Finally, thank you to my wife Sharon for making the turbo my christmas present!!

i am completely satisfied with this BD super-b and am having as much fun as an adult male can have with his clothes on!!!! Oo.

oh yeah - i have to update my sig.

After I istalled mine - I had to look down a few times to make sure the settings on my TST were right - Level 3 now feels like level 5. The only drawback is I used to be able to black out a street - now same settings hardly any smoke, pretty efficient.

The best part is its cheap in price!!

I was able to put the stock exhaust system back on without cutting but took it off and put a BD 5" system on - way nicer sound.

Good luck with your latest mod & by the way how did you get your wife to buy you truck toys ???? I had to buy my wife a hemi Durango to get her to quit nagging me about my truck ( need for work items )

i'm glad i read this you guys have answered all but a few questions. first question is always how much did you spend on you new turbo? second question is the size of the turbos on 2003 and 2005's i have heard from a friend that off the turbo it is 4" all the way no tapper from the turbo? so that leads to the final question if your going with a bigger turbo what exhaust are you runnig to run this?

T,

I bought my turbo from www.stcperformance.com, ran me $1,000 delivered, I caught it on sale. As far as turbo size, I think the 05, are 4" on the exhaust side. I know the 05 stock turbo is larger then the 03's, housing wise. My super B bolted right on to my 4" dppi exhaust, cutting had to be done on the afe airbox to make it fit. Doesn't the 05 have a straight 4" exhaust right from the turbo? The Super B should bolt right on your truck.

And if you do upgrade the turbo, I would purchase the ATS exhaust manifold, and be done with it. You'll be right there, and you will probably wind up putting one on anyways to keep your egt's under control. May as well do it now.

Thanks. The Thing Is I Was Looking At 24v But Then I Decided That The Price Change From A 24v To A New Common Rail Was Worth The Jump I Have Found A Few With In 2000-3000 Dollars Difference. So Now Looking At My Father In Laws And Trying To Talk To All The People On Tdr To See What I'm In For. So Any Other Advice On Them Let Me Know. I Would Like To Know Some Power Numbers And About Boxes. I Work With An Edge Rep. But I Like Tst Boxes. I Need To Know Because My Wife Pulls As Much Or More Than I Do Thats Why I'm Selling The 12v I Need A Truck I Can Turn Off Or Mostly.

i have yet to see temps over 1000 deg. the gauge responds very quickly and has not exceeded that yet. i was hitting 1500 occasionally with the stock turbo.

i keep the stock manifold and stock exhaust system. i just cut the pipe between the crossmember and the muffler and shortened it and put a pipe coupler back on.

my turbo kit included an adapter to go from the 4" to 3-1/2" pipe that the 04. 0 trucks have. that is why the pipe was shortened.

the overall sound of the truck is the same, however the turbo is a much more pure sound, with no harmonics, and as i mentioned before, sounds more like a class 8 type truck. the turbo is obviously not overspeeding as the factory one was. i can't wait till summer time to roll the windows down and hear it.

there is definately more power on 2,2 than with the stock unit. i can't even think about 5,5 in this weather. :{

Why would anyone with an 04. 5 or 05 go from a 62mm compressor wheel stock to a 58mm superB sized compressor wheel?

I know the exhaust wheel and housing are bigger on the superB but it just seems like a step backwards.

The super b has an impeller unlike any other turbo that is why it spools so quickly and still has a high volume of airflow. Jim I am glad your happy with your turbo if anybody else is interested in one of these I plan on giving out the same good price I gave to Jim for as long as I can

can anybody tell me how to stcak a tst box with an edge ez. . do you hook the tst to the map sensor first an then the ez or the ez to the map sensor and then thetst ive hooked both ways and can tell little difference. . it seems to haul each way

Doesnt matter... tried mine both ways - no difference.

I am liking what I hear about this turbo. It would be interesting to see what sort of comparison it makes to a stock 35/12 turbo on a '96 12-valve. While it won't be as dramatic as a restrictive 3rd Gen turbo it certainly has to have improved flow on the exhaust side, if the comment about the drive/boost pressure ratio is close to 1:1 to about 40psi.

I was planning on an HX40, but this one sounds like the way to go, being I'm shooting for about 350-375hp.
