what a difference from stock!
i have had it in since Dec 31st and have been driving it under different conditions. i wanted to have some good 2nd and 3rd impressions before posting. this is my
original post on why i replaced the factory turbo.
so far:
1. it was very hard going 100 miles while taking it easy breaking it in. i kept under 10 lbs for about 50 miles (stop and go) and then under 20 lbs for the next 50. even after that i still never had it over 30 for another 50. realistically you can't stay in it beyond 3 or 4 seconds in the rain and on the wet roads we have had here all week.
2. i get the same power at lower boost than before. this is probably because there is much less restriction with this turbo.
3. the turbo whine is different, it tends to be a lower frequency at any given boost. probably because it turns slower for a given air flow. this truck sounds much more like a big rig cummins now. its a beautiful thing.
4. turbo lag seems about the same as stock. i actually hear more speed change at slow speeds (40 mph) with very minor throttle change. it seems very responsive.
5. at 70 mph cruising, i can hear my engine! it occurred to me after about 10 minutes on the highway that i wasn't hearing the turbo, just the beautiful sound of the engine. HOWEVER, if you get into it, the turbo sounds off immediately.
6. haven't had the box past 4,3. didn't have any reason to. this baby is more than adequate at 3,3 for daily "launching". i will probably ease up to higher numbers once the roads get dry and the turbo gets some more miles on it.
7. for those of you wanting to know the correct bomb order - DO THE TURBO FIRST!!!!!
8. by the way, you can hit 40 lbs boost really fast!
final thoughts:
while i did have some minor problems during installation, most of them were my fault. i did have to cut the front pipe off about 1-1/2". i couldn't push the exhaust any farther back on the hangers. other than grinding a little off the motor mount to clear the waste gate controller, this is bolt on.
thank you KYLE (KYLE4) for your help and good price.
thank you TDR for helping me make the right decision.
Finally, thank you to my wife Sharon for making the turbo my christmas present!!
i am completely satisfied with this BD super-b and am having as much fun as an adult male can have with his clothes on!!!! Oo.

oh yeah - i have to update my sig.
