Question

Not trying to hijack the thread but the 2 turbo's being discussed here are the exact 2 I am trying to decide on which to buy. If I am going to run the Juice only (on level 5 once the transmission is upgraded and a FASS is in) which turbo does anyone think would suit me better?

Also, I drive empty about 50% of the time and when loaded it is with a slide in and towing a quad trailer.

I appreciate any input.

Scott

I just finished installing a Phat Shaft 62 on my 05 3500 about 30 minutes ago. The truck only has a TS Ramifier that I had them program for mileage only. It was no faster than my brothers truck (exactly the same truck) that's stock, except mine gets better mileage. In other words, It's not got a lot of fuel. It does have a different muffler, and no cat.

I didn't expect to really notice much difference just bolting on the turbo, though it was a nice surprise. It spooled as well, if not better than stock. You can tell a large difference in how much less you have to depress the accelerator to get up to speed. Normal driving was a very nice improvement. Wide open was just as good. It's no race truck by any means, though this turbo is a great benefit to a near stock truck. .

I bought it on ebay..... I hope this information helps those looking for an affordable, yet reputable turbo.

it will lower egt's, so you can add more fuel. more power comes from fuel. it also breethes better as compared to the tiny 9cm2 hy-35 exhaust housing (less backpressure). the piersIfied turbo should blow more air but the small turbine exhaust housing is untouched

hope this helps

So with the different turbo you could run a box on a higher setting for towing as the EGTs would be less? I am just trying to figure out what benefit I would see if I got one.

Would changing the turbo affect the fueling and decrease MPG?

I would like to try a different turbo other than the stock one I'm running if it will increase Milage and give more power. I have the standard CTD 250 HP.

If you have no fuelling mods, I think you would be wasting your money... The only one that I have heard of that helps a stock engine is piers stock-mod'ed one

Going with a bigger turbo can effect mileage 2 different ways.

Pulling a trailer you can make power more efficiently and gain mileage and power.

Hot rodding around you can definitely make more power with the bigger unit.

Now running empty usually the bigger the turbo you go with you will see a slight decrease in mileage.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. (unless you go VGT)

The turbo was designed to flow enough air to support 400HP. If you look at the map, you'll see the excellent surge resistance.

How do you construct one of these maps if you don't have one? I did the boost versus drive pressure graph for my SPS66. Although I haven't experienced surging yet while towing, I would be interested to see what the map was.

Also, what is pressure ratio? Boost:drive? How do you calculate kg/s for "X" HP? Do you use temperature differential before and after intercooler, intake versus compressor outlet, etc, while on a dyno?

I might have to go dig up my old textbooks...

This was my first full day with the new turbo installed. My truck is not heavily fueled, and I still saw a nice increase in power. Mileage has also went up. I didn't expect that either. I'm used to diesel trucks and add ons. This information isn't coming from a newcomer with a new toy. I am very satisfied with the new turbo and benefits of it. I see only advantages to put it on a near stock truck.

I did have some oil dripping after I drove it. It seems to be dripping from the bottom of the turbo where the oil drain tube connects to it. I'll fix that tomorrow.

Industrial Injection makes the "phat shaft" series of turbos... - www.IndustrialInjection.com

Similair turbos can be found at High Tech Turbo - www.htturbo.com

PS - your trucks in "D" status - woohoo!!!! :D

Sweet Tommygun!!! As you can tell I'm starting to get the BOMB'ing itch and I don't even have the truck yet! Oo. Actually, I just ordered some ISSPRO gauges, AFE intake and MBRP exhaust for it. :-laf

A new turbo is down the road a few years... :D

JTryles,

Do you know Lsfarm (another TDR member). He is also in Holly. You must know him it is sure not a very big place :)

I don't know him personally, but I have seen a dark green 2nd gen running around here with stacks! Wonder who that is? I actually live a little closer to Ortonville then Holly. Kind of right between the two towns- Groveland Township- near the Scramlin and Cybulski farms (where I've seen the stacked Ram).

I figured I would try the "submit best offer" button.

I entered $900 and the seller excepted. I was shocked. :D

These maps cannot be generated, the most be done in a dyno cell that is made for turbos. All the data is then compiled by a computer and the map is generated.

Ok, even though I have 2 of those automotive turbocharger books (Turbochargers & Maximum Boost), I still have tons more questions!

1) Do you have any pics of a dyno cell? Are dyno cells cost prohibitive such that it limits turbo vendors from providing the maps?

2) How do you "drive" the turbo? With a huge fan? Or is an engine exhaust stuck to it with a whole pile of intrumentation attached to it?

3) If you change the exhaust wheel size/design/etc. , but keep the compressor design constant, is the map still essentially the same or shifted left to right etc. ?
