vacuum pump the culprit?

My 90 needs a new transmition. I'm not sure if I want to go to the NV4500 because of the issues with them and the hydraulic throw-out bearing. And thinking that the Getrag is cheaper($$$$as always is tight) so every penny counts. and as long as its coming out/down a new clutch kit is going in probly the stock 13" sachs. I was thinking if I get a rebuilt G-360 and overfill it by the quart it shoud be good to go for atleast another 163K right? I don't pull a trailer as much with it now as I did and it is now at 12K instead of 17K that should help too. But what is TDR's opinion?

If you are speaking of the 5th gear nut backing off, that is cured with a fully splined main shaft, so there are no more issues. I had one installed by Quad 4x4 and it made the best shifting truck I've ever had... it was a pleasure to shift. All of his trannys come with a fully-splined main shaft.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as a "hydraulic throw out bearing", I believe all CTD's use a hydraulic system... as did my 1984 F*RD; it's more of a feature of the chassis than the transmission.

the throw-out bearing in the transmition bellhousing is hydraulic I believe. I dont like the idea of it leaking in there like the one in my wifes Comanchee. it includes the slave and every thing in the trannie. the hydraulic lines run in to the bellhousing and to the throw out. but yes all ctds run a hydraulic clutch. but the slave on the getrag is external. all internals are manual.

could be wrong

Spend the money ONCE, and get a new 4500 kit from Quad4x4. Rebuilt getrags are usually junk. You more than likely would be back in the same boat. Not too long ago, a guy went through quite a few rebuilds. In the long run, you will be ahead of the game with a new 4500.

I had a '99 with the NV4500 and never had a bit of trouble with it in 100,000k. I know it's still going with 150k and no problems.

I am not aware of the throwout bearing being an issue with those, just the 5th gear nut. I have several friends with NV4500's and they abuse them regularly with no ill effects. It's a pretty good transmission.

Fine!!!!I'll get a nv4500! do I still get a speedometer? Or is that just the 5600 that doesn't have that on the trans? Quads are NEW? like new new or new rebuilt? I just want to be able to drop the old one do the clutch thing and put in the new one. right now the trans is out of my wifes Jeep and it would have been all done and back to gether but the bell housing is cracked like a road map! so in with a new one but not before going to flag to get it, then its the wrong one cause the 86 had no cam shaft positioning sensor on it, but the 87 did so sol on that. te rightone should be in on wendsday of next week but one vehicle aint gonna cut it much longer! and my trans is whining bad expesialy in 5th.

I beleive its the 94-97 nv4500 that have the hydraulic bearing. What would be perfect would be new driveshafts and rearend and an early 5600 whith the 1 1/4 input.

edit: another question; will the bellhousing from an nv4500 or 5600 either one fit over the 13" factory clutch?or is that gonna cause an issue?

Quads are brand new nv4500's NOT rebuilt as other vendors try to sell you at Quads new price. You do have a 4 wheel drive right? The speedo hookup is in the t-case not transmission as in 2wd. Quad has a direct bolt up kit. Go to www.quad4x4.com. If you go to a 5600, much more mods. The 5600 with 1 1/4" input shaft was only available in 99, with short availability, good luck finding that one.
