I have a friend that just purchased an 06 2500 Cummins Automatic Ram.

Everything was fine until about 1500 miles and he started noticing a loss of fuel mileage, a noticeable change in the sound of the engine at speed and what he described as a "gurgling" sound sometimes during running.

He said the only thing he could think of that may have contributed to the problem was that after purchasing the truck, he was not able to follow the break in procedure top speed due to the fact of having to run at highway speeds soon after purchase. He did not tow with the vehicle during break in.

We live in Rockford Illinois area and he is unsure of the knowledge of the dealership mechanics. Can qualified Cummins mechs take care of warranty work or does all of this work have to go to the Dodge Dealership?

Thanks... . gary moore

The warrantee is through Dodge, there is no warrantee from Cummins. Have him take it in, most dealers are pretty decent while it is under warrantee, if they do not find anything I would not worry you got 100k mile warrantee on the engine if there is a problem it will show up before then.

Warranty work is done through Dodge because Dodge buys the engines without a warranty from Cummins. Cummins will be more than happy to work on the engine for you, but you'll get a bill at the end of it.

An engine noise change is most likely a fouled/plugged/faulty injector. I woud have him go in and mention to the dealership how the mileage drop has been noticed under the same driving conditions and the noise of the engine has changed.

You could also try running some injector cleaner in the truck, driving it hard and seeing how it runs after that. If he can't tow with the truck, I'd recommend he gets the truck out in an area where he can push some steep hills. It's not going to kill the truck if he can't tow, but it doesn't hurt to drive the truck hard when everything is still setting in.

New Truck Issues

The highway speeds should not have an effect on the motor at break-in. I have a 2005 with the 5. 9 and use it at 1500 miles to tow a bobcat, 8k trailer and two concrete steps. That is over 13k in weight. No problems before or after that. It sounds like a definite factory originated problem.

Bought my truck out of state. The dealership was very specific not to use the AC or Cruise Control right away. Other than that no issues. My 06' is averaging 16mpg with 4800miles on the clock. I've only towed twice so far. Starting in April I'll be towing quite a bit.

I read my owners manual from cover to cover and it didn't say not to use the AC or the cruise control right away. Doesn't make sense.

Thats a new first! Don't use ac or cruise in break in. Chezz. Better not roll the windows down eaither until windshield sealant dries!

They probably mentioned the cruise control due to needing to vary your rpm's and speed during initial break in. But the AC that would be hard becuase if you use your defroster the ac compressor is on. Who knows, but I doubt that is the cause of the original poster's problems sounds like a trip to the dealer.

Almost sounds like a fuel pressure loss doesn't it?? Like lift pump pressure?? It should have the in-tank pump which the CP3 can pull fuel past unlike the fuel bowl mounted version...

How about the fuel filter? I read that a lot of you guys with your new fangled trucks get VERY dirty fuel filters only after a few thousand miles when new.

Go for the cheap fix first.
