New TSB 21-006-01c on NVG5600 transmissions... Looks Serious
It looks like DC will replace the bad transmassions.
TSB 21-006-01c
Date: Aug. 27, 2003
THIS BULLETIN SUPERCEDES CONFIDENTIAL TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21b-01-16 AND CONFIDENTIAL TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21b-01-16a. DEALER NETWORK PERSONNEL AND DAIMLER CHRYSLER PERSONNEL WILL CONSIDER THIS ISSUE FPR-1 STATUS AS OF ABOVE DATE. RECALL PROCEDURES WILL BE TRANSMITTED TO AFFECTED PERSONNEL AND VEHICLE OWNERS AT A LATER DATE.
Models: 2500/3500 Ram Trucks equipped with NVG5600 transmissions, build-dates between March 1999 to May 2003.
Discussion:
This bulletin involves the lateral rotation of the third, fourth, and fifth planetary gears on the main countershaft of the transmission, which can result in extensive transmission damage.
Symptom/Condition:
Customers may complain of circular motion of NVG5600 shift pattern insert at the bezel knob-top, a mechanical condition known as "spherical hypozoidal-wave vibration. " This circular effect of the pattern insert may complete several revolutions before the transmission destroys itself. The characteristics of the countershaft fork and the alloy used in the shift column transmits the vibrations from the relevant planetary gears through the main countershaft, as these gears become loose and begin to gyrate around the poidal axis. These vibrations create a resonance in the bezel, resulting in rotation of the pattern insert.
Diagnosis:
(1) Verify that the shift pattern insert is rotating. Measure spherical hypozoidal-wave vibration by noting the degrees that "reverse" has rotated past 45*. Total degrees of rotation should not exceed 209*.
NOTE: VEHICLES DRIVEN IN SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE WILL EXPERIENCE "ANTIPODAL SPHERICAL HYPOZOIDAL-WAVE VIBRATION. " ROTATION OF PATTERN INSERT MAY BE REVERSED. IN THAT CASE, TOTAL DEGREES OF ROTATION SHOULD NOT EXCEED -162*.
(2) If spherical hypozoidal-wave vibration has been verified, drain transmission fluid and remove left-side PTO plate from NVG5600 transmission. Inspect third, fourth, and fifth planetary gears for lateral rotation. Inspect countershaft for scouring, liquifaction, or reverse contrafication. If any of the above conditions are found, transmission must be replaced with factory upgrade unit.
NOTE: SEVERAL ITEMS MAY CAUSE A SIMILAR CONDITION, BUT REQUIRE TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY TO DIAGNOSE. IN PARTICULAR, THE TECHNICIAN SHOULD INSPECT THE DISASSEMBLED TRANSMISSION FOR BALLISTIC SYCHRONIZER FAILURE. (SEE TSB 21-006-01c, FORTHCOMING) HOWEVER, THE REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR THIS TSB INVOLVES ONLY THE DIAGNOSIS OF LATERAL PLANETARY MOVEMENT AND REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION WITH UPGRADE.
NOTE: AFFECTED TRANSMISSIONS MUST BE RETURNED TO DAIMLER CHRYSLER, PER STAR COLLECTION PROCEDURES. MARK ALL TRANSMISSIONS RAE-77 WOOL PURGE.
