New TSB 21-006-01c on NVG5600 transmissions... Looks Serious

It looks like DC will replace the bad transmassions.

TSB 21-006-01c

Date: Aug. 27, 2003

THIS BULLETIN SUPERCEDES CONFIDENTIAL TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21b-01-16 AND CONFIDENTIAL TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21b-01-16a. DEALER NETWORK PERSONNEL AND DAIMLER CHRYSLER PERSONNEL WILL CONSIDER THIS ISSUE FPR-1 STATUS AS OF ABOVE DATE. RECALL PROCEDURES WILL BE TRANSMITTED TO AFFECTED PERSONNEL AND VEHICLE OWNERS AT A LATER DATE.

Models: 2500/3500 Ram Trucks equipped with NVG5600 transmissions, build-dates between March 1999 to May 2003.

Discussion:

This bulletin involves the lateral rotation of the third, fourth, and fifth planetary gears on the main countershaft of the transmission, which can result in extensive transmission damage.

Symptom/Condition:

Customers may complain of circular motion of NVG5600 shift pattern insert at the bezel knob-top, a mechanical condition known as "spherical hypozoidal-wave vibration. " This circular effect of the pattern insert may complete several revolutions before the transmission destroys itself. The characteristics of the countershaft fork and the alloy used in the shift column transmits the vibrations from the relevant planetary gears through the main countershaft, as these gears become loose and begin to gyrate around the poidal axis. These vibrations create a resonance in the bezel, resulting in rotation of the pattern insert.

Diagnosis:

(1) Verify that the shift pattern insert is rotating. Measure spherical hypozoidal-wave vibration by noting the degrees that "reverse" has rotated past 45*. Total degrees of rotation should not exceed 209*.

NOTE: VEHICLES DRIVEN IN SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE WILL EXPERIENCE "ANTIPODAL SPHERICAL HYPOZOIDAL-WAVE VIBRATION. " ROTATION OF PATTERN INSERT MAY BE REVERSED. IN THAT CASE, TOTAL DEGREES OF ROTATION SHOULD NOT EXCEED -162*.

(2) If spherical hypozoidal-wave vibration has been verified, drain transmission fluid and remove left-side PTO plate from NVG5600 transmission. Inspect third, fourth, and fifth planetary gears for lateral rotation. Inspect countershaft for scouring, liquifaction, or reverse contrafication. If any of the above conditions are found, transmission must be replaced with factory upgrade unit.

NOTE: SEVERAL ITEMS MAY CAUSE A SIMILAR CONDITION, BUT REQUIRE TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY TO DIAGNOSE. IN PARTICULAR, THE TECHNICIAN SHOULD INSPECT THE DISASSEMBLED TRANSMISSION FOR BALLISTIC SYCHRONIZER FAILURE. (SEE TSB 21-006-01c, FORTHCOMING) HOWEVER, THE REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR THIS TSB INVOLVES ONLY THE DIAGNOSIS OF LATERAL PLANETARY MOVEMENT AND REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION WITH UPGRADE.

NOTE: AFFECTED TRANSMISSIONS MUST BE RETURNED TO DAIMLER CHRYSLER, PER STAR COLLECTION PROCEDURES. MARK ALL TRANSMISSIONS RAE-77 WOOL PURGE.

Well this is concerning. I generally understand TSBs, but man, this one has me consulting the dictionary - lots of $100 words. I'm thinking if I can't understand it how are most dealerships going to handle it?!?!

Seriously though, I had my transmission replaced about 40K ago when it had a major bearing failure (under warranty). If I remember correctly they put some silicone in the shift knob so that the lock nut wouldn't come loose. My shift pattern has has either rotated slightly counter clockwise or it wan't installed exactly right. If it was installed at a slight angle then what happens if the silicone is keeping it from rotating and I really have this "condition"? I wonder if it worth while to pull the PTO cover and check out the planetary gears for lateral rotation (some pictures sure would be nice on TSBs!).

Anyone out there had this TSB done or have the exact symptoms?

are they talking about the pattern printed on the handle mine has mysteriously rotated 1/2 way around and my transmission had to have third gear replaced at 1000 miles and it also had a fragged syncro? i dont no what to think of this TSB?

That's why I said to explain it in English. :-laf If your shift pattern insert moved take it out and re-glue it. If you have to move your shifter toward the passenger door to go into first then you have real problems. This has to be a joke, but it is well written and pretty funny. :p

Yeah, I thought the Southern Hemisphere thing was a little over the top too. ;) Hemi®Dart is gonna have to elaborate a little on this one. This may be as good as Jponders "whupass" Ford Powerstroke impostor gig! :D

By the way the TSB # looks suspicious too:

I tried to find the source before I posted it but couldn't. I found it at the DTR. I will PM the guy that posted it.

Now that I read it closer I think its a joke too.

OH NO!!! I have the Eaton/Fuller knob on so I am unable to do a diagnosis on my NV5600  I sure hope I have not jeprodised my oem P/O/S warrenty, ya know the warrenty is so valueable, I just dont know what to do

Cheers, Kevin

I read that on August 26th one of those planetary gears was as close it has been in 60 thousand years. It seems to me we have to take our trucks to the Southern Hemisphere every six months or so to have the shift pattern reverse itself before any permanent damage occurs.
