So I hear a whistling sound during heavy exhaust braking on my last trip with the trailer but no change in performance at all and no codes. I dropped it off at the dealer today to check it out and they've ordered a new turbo assembly for it to put on tomorrow. Would have cost me $7,800.00 if I had not bought the extended warrantee for $3,800.00. As well they did both from u-joints a few weeks back on warrentee as well. I'd say I'm getting my value out of my warrantee and I've got 16 months to go with the warrantee.
Has anyone else had a turbo replaced on a newer truck yet? I'm at 125,000km.

I would say things are going wrong with your truck way too soon, mine is 10 years old , turbo still good, just now doing my front ujoints on axle and replacing hubs because I tore into it that deep, 173,000 miles, I don't think I want a new one, don't seem like they last long enough, always recall on them too, anyway just my .02 worth

Well, I got the truck back just now. They started removing things to do the turbo exchange and found that the exhaust manifold gasket at cylinder #6 was leaking, so no new turbo, just a new gasket. They didn't have time to do the repair quick enough before my camping trip that I leave tomorrow for, so they put it back together and will do it next week for me. At least I know I'm not going to have a turbo grenade on me.
That would explain my diagnosis of smelling raw exhaust, I kind of didn't think it would be some internal turbo issue.

I wonder if it wasn't under warranty if you'd be paying for that turbo.
Probably. This just reaffirms that my plans to get a new one in the winter next year with extended warrantee will happen. I don't want to own these without a warranttee. A few repairs like that and I've spent the difference that a new truck would cost me Why drive one off warrantee and live wondering when the next BIG repair bill will hit you and have a truck that's more than five years old. It will cost the same over a ten year period to drive two trucks that are new at five years than it would cost to drive the one truck for ten years with the potential repairs in the mean time and then you have a truck that's ten years old and not much resale value left in it. Especially with all the emissions and electronics that are in these trucks now.

Shouldn't that exhaust leak have thrown a code? Seems to me it would have shown a lean condition....

BTW, My 2008, has whistled since the truck was new in Nov 2007. I can put the truck in neutral and engage the high idle with the exhaust brake on and boy does it whistle, my neighbor said it sounds like a jet airplane engine. it is a high pitch whine. I have 108,000 miles on the truck now and it still will whistle when the exhaust brake is on and the truck is stopped.

Who knows, you may have a gasket leak somehwere. On my last truck, an 07.5, right near the end when I was about to sell it, it developed a big whistle, the turbo was hanging by one bolt and when we fixed it, half the gasket was missing altogether. Once that was fixed, the truck ran like it never did in the past 150,000km's or so, which meant that it had a gasket problem all along and would explain why my chipped, deleted dually couldn't past my buddies stock 2010 2500 that was stock pulling the same size of trailer. So you may want to look into that whistle, it might be costing you some performance that you never knew you could gain.

Well, I got my truck back. When they pulled the exhaust manifold off it was warped out of spec. so they put on a new one.
