Am I reading this right....a new Mopar water pump for my 2005 CTD is $181 while the Gates at Genos is $37? Am I looking at the right parts for my truck? I'm not too keen on putting a Gates on my truck and will be going with the OEM, but I question the disparity in prices.

First off who builds the water pumps for a Cummins engine? Not Chrysler they either buy from a supplier who builds their pumps; China maybe. Or in the case of Cummins they will/may buy from Cummins and will repackage the water pump, similar to the oil/fuel filters that are MOPAR for the Cummins engine.

Now as far as the sale price of the part. The replacement part price this has nothing to do with the production cost or quality of the product. If Chrysler is like and they are, other large international OEM's. The price is set as to what the market will support in price realization.

Go to a NAPPA store, Rock-Auto Discount or a Cummins engine service dealer and see what the selling price of a replacement water pumps is for your engine? I bet Geno's is right in the ballpark with their pricing.

Jim

If you plan ahead (I try to) you can get a gen-u-wine chrysler part off of fleabay for about $50
I got one in a sealed chrysler box for $45 shipped.

The cummins stuff is Reman. The Gates lasted as long as the stock Cummins unit did. So I would go with the Gates

The Cummins water pumps are currently new in box. It's been about 2 years since they dumped the remans. And they are manufactured by Corcentric AFAIK.

Not knocking the Gates by any means.

Mike.

Mike I think there is an inherent design flaw with too much stress on the bearing area. As stated had both and this third one I am using new cummins. I had forgotten that I put a new new one in. We will see how long this one last.

Same thing happened to me while at my local "stealership" where they discovered my water pump was leaking. I almost fainted when they told me how much the Mopar w/p was. Geno's is close to me and I got the Gates unit at Genos and had the dealer put it on while doing some other work on my truck. They couldn't believe I got the pump for that price so I flashed them the receipt. OMG.

It's the double mark up syndrone. Get the Gates unit at Geno's and feel happy. PS - The crew are Geno's at great folks and will go out of their way to help you.

Good luck.

When my wp went out I priced the gates pump at genos and one at napa. Napa ran $10-15 higher than genos but had a lifetime warranty so I got it there. To my surprise it was the same gates pump that genos sells.

My stock Cummins pump had England stamped on it.
I didn't catch where my replacement Cummins pump was made.
Using a friend's discount card I sourced the replacement for $131 at a local Cummins distributor here.

The first time my '05 started leaking, I put a gates replacement in it from Genos. The gates lasted 2 months (about 7,000 miles) before it started leaking. I won't use another gates, but I had good luck with them up until the bad one on the '05.

I went thru 2 gates pumps from different sources in less than 4 months and 20k. Needless to say the last purchase was from Cummins for a new WP. Save yourself the hassle and annoyance and pass on the Gates, get a new one form Cummins for around $150.

My Gates from Geno's was gone after two years and 40000 miles.
Just replaced with a Cummins last week, $175 plus tax.

This....unless you like changing parts repetiously

Amen to that. I started down the path of keeping a backup and found the Gates from Rock Auto for $26, but being made in China it will not be on my truck. I'm carrying nothing but a Concentric made OEM Cummins for a backup. I talked to a water pump rebuilder who specializes in repairing and selling parts for water pumps. He said the biggest problem with China sourced hardware was the seals, they just would not stand up. I worked on ag and oil field equipment for years and it was common to rebuild water pumps regardless of brand. John Crane seals always seemed to work well.

I have a BNIB Concentric that I will be installing soon as part of a 100k maintenance. I plan to remove and rebuild the oem pump that the truck came to use as a spare if I can find the proper quality bearings and seals.

I have read plenty of threads about short life with non-OEM water pumps. It appears that cost per mile is about the same between Cummins and non-Cummins.

Always buy Cummins parts from Cummins as Mopar has a HUGE markup on them.
