Howdy all, this is a great forum you have here,i have been reading it for a long time, but since i recently bought a Cummins figured i had better start posting. ;) I recently bought a 03 2500,quad cab 4x4. It has the 48re with 3. 73 rear ratio. I added B. F. G. 315's with a 2" leveling kit recently. Needless to say my power, mileage and driveability went south,as was expected. Now im trying to decide between the Edge EZ or the Bully Dog torque dog (or any other fueling or timing box) I understand the Bully Dog makes its power by timing and pulse changes, but no fuel pressure change. Is this true?I also understand the Edge raises fuel line pressure and changes pulse?I am new to Cummins but have bombed a stroke in my earlier days. I want to maximize power, performance and fuel economy on a budget, and without scattering the 48. Are gauges a must have if i wont be towing anything for a while? All replies appreciated. Thanks,Mark.

I'll answer the easy one -- the gauges are a must (IMO). Even if your box of choice manages everything for you it's good to have a second opinion you can visually confirm!

As for the boxes; good questions; since I just started bombing (this one -- did 2 others previously) I'll anxiously await the answers too!

Edge is strictly fuel rail pressure at this point. Timing is coming from them.

Bullydog has a combination of rail pressure and timing.

I have heard many good things about both boxes.

Thanks for the replys fellas. Scott,i see you have a Pro Tech box. Are you happy with its performance thus far?Not to mention your gauge install looks sweet. How long to install? How much did they set you back? Thanks,Mark.

I love the Pro Tech box! 5 years in two pickups and still good as new, minus a few scratches and weather aluminum. Very well made products.

I bought my gauges from TST . Check the link for their website and pricing. The install took about 4 hours to make the mounting plate and everything. I havent hooked up the trans temp sender yet. That happens next week when I change the oil.

The diesel performance shop I chat with have told me to HOLD off on a box until NEW ones are out and bugs in them corrected. Their a Bullydog dealer and try not to sell or install any boxes on 3g trucks. Said be patient. I'm waiting.

I have had both the Edge EZ and the Bully Dog on my 03' The Bully Dog box was timing and fueling. It made the Edge look weak (even on level 6). The Bully Dog had way more get up and go. It also had higher egt's by about 200 deg on my truck(pulling). Gas milage was down 4-5 miles a gallon compared to the Edge.

But all good things have to come to a end. The Bully Dog had a cam sensor problem. My truck would blow smoke like a fog machine and run like crap give me a engine light and die. Flip the switch back to the stock mode and it would run again. I got tired of it and was worried about engine damage. Bully dog has a new box to replace it that is fueling only, have not tested it out yet. Have the EZ back on for now. Waiting for the new box's.

I like my Bully Box. While it hasn't hurt mileage it hasn't really helped it noticeably either, but my MPG has been good since new.

A friend of mine has a Western Diesel box, on his 03 HO and it fly's . This is the second one though, the first one set off some codes.

The truck made 377 on the rollers and ran 15. 20@92 at the track.

It smokes like crazy though in the high setting. He doesn't have gauges so know idea how high the EGT's are. It's a lease;)

YET ANOTHER BOX

I have a box by PDQ called the volumizer It works great

has 3 settings off 60-100... you can switch on the fly

wen on off still fools boost I'm very happy with it so far

if you pm me we can talk price$$$

I have the latest bully dog box on my 03. Stock ,50, 90 hp. I really like it. I always run on 50 hp. the milage is about the same as stock. When you run at 90 hp the truck really goes. I never rode in a truck with a edge box so I can't compare. I hope this helps RHINO 50:D

What transmission,motor combo,rear gears, are you running?Thanks,Mark.

I have dyno'ed the DD True torque (programmed a bit differently form the EZ) and got 80 hp from it, flawless operation on all trucks I know about using it. We're still waiting for the "big" boxes to arrive, but you will find that the stock turbo and lift pump will need upgrading if you do too much. . .

The diesel performance shop I chat with didn't think much of the Volumizer. They liked EZ and BullyDog stuff. But As I stated they advised me not to buy any until new and more perfected boxes make their deput.

Catoiler,

How does that "Volumizer" feel compared to my EZ? Does it hook in the same?

Me waitin' for the "03 Comp

Installed the Volumizer yesterday... WOW what a huge difference :) incredible acceleration gains!

HVAC,It hooks up to the crank and cam sensors as well as the same two for the EZ. Got it down to about 5 minutes to take off.

The thing will break the tires loose from a dead stop now!I think the EZ has a little more low end torque but the Volumizer works better on mid and top. I'm not afraid to pass someone now as before it took forever!CAN'T WAIT FOR THE REAL BOX!!!Got to do something with the transmission now.
