I just purchased a 91 1/2 D350 cab and ch. , 5sp. with 62k on it {got it from a small town in Texas and was able to verify all the work done on it from day one}. My question is two parts, I purchased a set of PODs and a 16 turbo and have all the guages but have not installed them yet, I have been reading all the threads about the smoke from the PODs and I don't want that problem. Can I use them and adjust the pump so it will get benefit from them or should I send them back for some thing else? I am going to pull 20k at times with it. Part two, where can I buy a 3 1/2 or 4 inch exhaust for the old truck? No one on ebay has them any more. I have been reading all the threads since I became a new member and I am impressed with TDR. Thanks, Bighairyperson

Some guys have been able to adjust the pump to reduce EGT while towing as well as smoke. I'd sort-of think that if you'll want high flow nozzels, adjusting the pump to limit smoke and EGT is sort of odd. Set the pump and nozzels to work together if you get my meaning.

The most I have towed w/ ther POD's would have to be 6k and the EGT would climb to 1100° easy. If I was to tow say 1200#'s I'd have to slow way down or perform some backwards mods to limit the flow of fuel to the nozzels. Or add twins!!!!!!!! :)

I have made my own 4" exhaust. I'm thinking Rip sells the pipe minus the down-pipe section. You can obtain this piece from PDR or make one yourself. Not hard if you have a well equipped shop.

bhp, 20k behind your 6k truck? Pods and 26k or even 20k probly wouldn't do good. Pods are not recommended for towing. Bosch 190's are about your only other option or towing and not as hot injectors. Welcome to the TDR bro, ask away. . Exhaust, if you can weld or have access to a welder you can buy all the 3. 5 or 4" pieces from a medium heavy duty truck parts store/shop and fab it up yourself for cheap.

bhp,

Do the gages first!

Then I would install the exhaust and PODs (and a better air filter. . you didn't mention that) and do some trials before adjusting the pump. Then I would make the pump adjustments to get the balance YOU are comfortable with between towing power, egt, and smoke.

BOMB away!! :D

Newby here,

I do have a K&N air filter. Who is Rip? So it sounds like I got the wrong injectors. I am going to do all the things I have read[set valves-set timing- adj. pump-and so on]. I do have a mig, and I did not think of buying the pipe and bends. Thanks! After I get this truck the way I want it I am going to take the cab off and put a 57 chevy pickup body with a big back glass on top of this cummins. I guess you would call it a Dodgerolet. Thanks, BHP.

There was thread on here a couple days ago about NAPA has the stuff to build your exhaust. Just search on napa and exhaust. should find it.

John, welcome to the ranch... you'll find it your second home... :D:D

I agree with JLeonard here... . do the gauges first. . from there you'll have a frame of reference on which to evaluate any other changes you make.

I think that there is an option that has been used by the "big dogs" for some time..... how about a valet switch... . ???

I had to go thru our emissions testing just last week. Now, two years ago I went thru the same test and out of an allowable 30ppm Nox, I was producing 24. 9ppm.

This year I did my "down tuning" a bit diffently than the last time.

I backed the timing off to stock index marks, turned by fuel screw out 1 2/3 turns, and disconnected the AFC boost tube and plugged the end resulting in zero "no boost" fueling.

This emission test I did last week produced a 14. 8ppm reading. Wow, was I surprised...

Ok, hang in there guys... just a bit more... .

With my current setup I can still hit 30 - 32 psi boost pretty quick, and have to REALLY work hard to approach 1200*F. This is quite a jump from my "pre-emissions" test. Before the "down tuning" I could hit 43 psi boost and see up to 1500*F very easily when getting on it, especially on a my test hill... . and that's was running empty without any extra weight.

Ok, how does this help the "POD and towing" question. . ??? well, I am going to install a valet switch to really make the performance mods much more user friendly...

You can switch off your extra fueling for towing or even around town and when you want to play, just throw the switch and you have instant max/aggressive fueling... .

The extra fuel the POD's provide is MORE than enough to get you moving and give you the good/safer pulling HP/torque when you need to work it, and the valet switch "on" gives you your race till you drop available with a single switch.

I'm going to try this on my truck and I'll report back when I've done the install and tested it on my normal driving route and test hill.

What do you think of that idea?????

Let me know if you like the idea and mabe we can help each other out with some fine tuning and refining the idea.

PB,

So are you saying you plan on putting in a solenoid valve to block the boost tube in "Valet mode", and open it up for "Play mode"?

Is that what I read?

Jay

Yup, you got it. In my case I have a great around town setting without the boost tube connected... but... . once or twice I've wanted the extra juice and didn't have it... so, go with a valet switch.

The only item that is not in the valet switch "option" is the pump timing. In my case I ran the timing back quite a bit to get thru testing. I will reset my timing when I do the valet mod. That way I have the timing I need and only the fuel/boost is regulated.

Put me on the list Pastor Bob. I wonder if It would work when I get my twins in? Probably not because I will need all the fuel I can get to spool them, but its worth a try.
