Assuming it's the same guy who developed a kit by the same name several years ago, I believe the filters are Caterpillar OEM parts, but I don't know who makes them for Caterpillar.

1 micron would be nice. I'm running 2 micron.

CAT is one option, but I'm inquiring about the Nicktane 1 micron microglass filter. 1 micron by what standard? Who makes it? Etc.

That's a $50. 00 filter!!! You can get a Cat 2 Micron filter for $17-18. 00. The Cat filter should be enough, in my opinion. Just think of all the high mileage engines that survived on 10 micron &, now, 7 micron filters. Bosch recommends 5 micron filtration so, 2 micron should be excellent filtration. Maybe not perfect but, still excellent.

I ran a 2 micron Cat filter on my auxillary tank for quite awhile without plugging. It never plugged up.

Cat filters are manufactured by Donaldson to Caterpillar specs... The 1R0749 and 1R-0750 are both excellent filters. Both have plenty of surface area and should last an adequate amount of time with normal fuel station fuel.

Let's not go off on tangents; we're not talking about CAT filters, perception of adequate filtration, cost/benefit analysis, or any of that. I am interested in information on microglass filters, and specifically, the Nicktane fuel filter.

Is it a new, better technology? Is it a marketing ploy? I haven't found much information about it and I'm seeking more.

What did Nicktane tell you?

Nick of Nicktane is the guy that started TheDieselPlace forum many years ago. I met him personally. His filter setups are good stuff. The Dmax guys use them alot.

I've been running a very small filter on my aux tank, for a Bobcat I want to remember... it still flows well after well over 75k, and its only 4-inches long and 2. 5-inches in diameter.

Our fuel isn't as "dirty" as we are lead to believe... not that you can't get a bad batch, but for the most part its clean. I firmly believe that water is much more of a problem with these 3rd gens than dirt.

When you're looking at filtration, try and find out the efficiency as well. A window screen can remove 1 MICRON particles, but it would not be very efficient at that level... ... maybe 1-2 percent!

Try to find the filtration specifications, then you will have a better idea of what you are buying. Just because a manufacture advertizes a specific MICRON rating, doesn't mean much unless you know how efficient it is at that rating.

I have done some research on this filter and haven't found squat for ratings and efficiency... SO I left well enough alone. I know of 2 filters that are 2um absolute, so I run either of those...

Look at the AD/FASS filters, and you'll see why you need to understand specs not just labels or advertisements.

The HF6604 is 95% at 1u, 98% at 3u, and 99. 5% at 5u... this is straight from Cummins Filtration.

That is also multi-pass specs, Fleetguard doesn't test single pass specs since its a hydraulic filter and hydraulic filters are closed loop. . It would be just like using a Amsoil Bypass element for fuel, its 2um absolute. . but not designed for fuel. (And fleetguard told me 98. 7% at 3um)

The main issues with the FASS/AD filters is the f/w separation, or lack there of. AD is 50% free and 0% emulsified at 20GPH, the FASS isn't even rated, Fleetguard never tested it!

We use Velcon (aquacon) filters on our jet fuel tanks at work and they are rated at 1/2 micron and remove free and emulsified water to less than 5 ppm. They are expensive and a little bit large but could make a great filter for our trucks. The small model is VF-31E with a ACO-21001L filter element. Just a thought.

Oh but wait... . the FASS system is continuously recirculating the fuel so it's continuously passing the same fuel over and over. Only thing is when you fill up the first bit of driving won't get the multiple passes.

That's a big difference between your single one-pass fuel filter mods and a FASS/AD system and why they use a multipass filter.
