I'm chasing a few electrical gremlins in my 92. My Speedometer, DRL's(I assume it's supposed to have them based on 91. 5 wiring diagrams) A/C are all dead, and the starter was on a rigged up on a pushbutton when I got it.
I figured the ignition switch was the issue with the starter, and replaced it to no avail, I found that the relay on the inner fender had no ground. Supplied to ground to it, and, it works as it should.
Looking at the wiring diagrams, the starter relay and the DRL's at the least ground at the same point, and the speedometer is tied into the DRL wiring.
How different is a 92 from a 91. 5 wiring wise? I know the 91 has a separate voltage regulator, does my 92 have the DRL module separate like the 91. 5 diagrams show, or is it part of the computer?
I think my issue is with the ground tied to the J9 splice, which the diagrams say is at the rear of the engine, but, I don't see it anywhere on my 92 truck.
Also, the truck is kicking out the following trouble codes: 12, 33, and 42. I find the 42 odd, as the truck is charging fine.

My early 91 and my 93 manual coincided many times, so I'd imagine a 92 FSM for a 91. 5 would be close enough. Wire colors may be different, but it should be easy enough to figure out.

Wish I could be more help to ya. Electrical stuff drives me nuts, and I have plenty of nightmares in my W350 to fix when I get it back together. Looks like a hydrogen bomb went off under my dash, but what can you expect with a cheap truck?

I've got a '92 FSM to use with my 91. 5. Which does not have DRL, don't know what the manual has on DRL. I would expect that starter relay to be grounded through a clutch switch with the stock wring. It grounds through the park/neutral switch on an automatic.

The DRL module is covered on page 8L-8 & 8L-9, the wiring diagrams are on page 8W-92 & 8W-93. There aren't any trouble shooting procedures that I have found.

The clutch switch is on the positive trigger for the relay(solid yellow wire) under the dash, the wiring diagrams show an auto as having a jumper in the plug under the dash. I can find in the diagrams where the relay is supposed to be grounded to, but, it doesn't do much good in actually finding where it is grounded to on the truck.
The DRL's don't really bother me, I didn't even realize it's supposed to have them, but, the module is grounded to the same place according to the 91. 5 wiring diagrams(I only have wiring diagrams, no FSM, I do have a Haynes, but, it's junk. ) They just make wiring up headlight relays more of a PITA, so, they wouldn't stay functioning anyway.

I think the wiring harnesses are different enough between a 91. 5 and a 92 that I'm pretty much SOL without the proper diagrams unless I start tearing the harness apart, which I really don't want to do. The wiring at the computer for one is nowhere even close.

I did find a ground directly behind the #6 valve cover, and it is good, but, I have no idea if it's what I'm looking for or not.
On your 93 diagrams, could you check and see where the Brown/yellow wire from the starter relay goes? I traced it to the computer, but, it's 2 wires coming off the relay plug, so that other one has to go somewhere. If it goes through the black connector on the engine with no switching in between, I have a broken wire somewhere, as there is a brown/yellow at that connector, and it has ground.

EM, the Brown /yellow wire goes to the PCM, and the other goes thru a splice to the ground wire from the fuel heater. The wire there is black/tan, goes thru a plug (changes to black) to the right headlight ground screw. It says," right side shield". The A/C clutch, blower motor, and under hood lamp all ground here also.

If it is an auto, the brn/yl goes to the neutral safety switch instead.

Thank you very much.
I got it figured out, started tracing the harness and found the brown wire that feeds power to the A/C relay had shorted to ground just past the fuseable links, and burned off, melting the insulation on a few wires, and burning off the brown/yellow wire. That fixes my A/C and starting issue, the speedo is next on the list.

Evan, glad you found it. Sometimes you just gotta tear 'em apart and look. :{ If you need any other help, just yell.
