Not sure where this belongs, mods feel free to relocate this.

I went to NJ inspection today. After waiting in the line about 1/2 hr one guy came out and told me that "vehicles over 8500 lbs are no longer inspected".

I've lived here my entire life... so first thought it "Oh S*** , what's this going to cost me?"

I asked him if there was something in print that I can carry around with me (being I passed inspection last time w/o a front license plate and got a ticket about a month later for not having a front license plate)#@$%!

No, there is no paperwork stating this.

I called the local PD and he confirmed it.

When did this happen?

This happened back in August/September. I think for vehicles under 8500lbs its just an emissions test, but no more safety inspection as all. They can issue warnings I believe for obvious stuff (cracked windhshield, etc. ) but they no longer perform the safety inspection. It is all emissions based and with the weight class of our trucks we are exempt. You are still responsible for all items, if you got caught in a random check point or for some reason were pulled over and subjected to a roadside inspection.

Heres some official blah blah blah from the DMV website.

State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission

Not sure whether to rejoice or be afraid of the yahoo next to me who is driving an unsafe vehicle?

Ill. stopped their safety inspections many years ago (or never had them). There are some pretty scary vehicles on the road in that state.

I think safety inspections should be performed at 3, 6, and 9 years of the vehicle's age, then every other year after that (or a similar schedule). Vehicles today are far more durable than they were when inspection laws were enacted. Vehicle registration should coincide with inspections. Passed inspection? The registration can be renewed. Failed inspection? Fix it, sell it or junk it.

I'm actually happy. I've been an owner operator so I keep on top of my stuff.

The way I see it is, the ones that never bothered with the inspection before will still be driving the same junk as they would have been.
