Does anyone have an idea... ... ... On start up I have no power. The more I accelerate the more smoke I make, but no power. Then coming home today I lost all power at about 65 mph, I pumped the pedal a few times and it came back to life. I stopped and restarted and everything was fine. Just now went to restart it and got no power only tons of smoke. Thanks.

Have you checked your turbo boots? The one from the intercooler may be cracked or broken. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can help further.

Good Day. Check your TPS (Throttle placement Sensor) Most likely it has gone bad. Around $150. 00-200. 00 Canadian.

Good Luck! :)

The fact that you have black smoke tells me you have fuel. The computer and the injection pump are reacting to the throttle position sensor. You are lacking air ,either a boost leak,DLeonhard mentioned the intercooler boots, other things to check are the turbo charger and wastegate. Make sure the turbo shaft spins easy and see if the wastegate is stuck open.

By the way, I failed to mention when this first happened about a week ago, I cranked when the light went off and heard a very loud pop, then the smoke scenario happened. It ran for a few minutes as If It were a gas rig and flooded then it cleared up until it happened again. I also have no codes except for the 1693 that seems to always be there. I'm not sure if this helps with your analysis, but I will try all of the above and respond back. Thanks, Packy

That loud pop was probably an intercooler boot blowing of. Look at the two lower inter cooler boots from underneath one on the drivers side and the other is on the passengerside side. The oil makes them slip of.

Checked all my boots and everything is fine. The truck ran fine all day today. This problem is very intermittent, any other ideas??

Don't know how else to explain the loud pop,You need to plumb in a boost gauge to see what your boost is when this occurs. See if the wastegate moves freely. Also check your filter minder. Could your filter be restricted, possible too much oil in your filter would restrict it.

Getting together boost gauge set up. Today had no smoking issues, but on the way home lost all throttle response. This time I just mashed it to floor and in a couple seconds she picked up and took off. Does anyone else suspect the throttle placement sensor that KDoerr mentioned in his post. Any help is deeply appreciated.

I also have no power on startup. When I press the pedal, I get a bunch of black smoke but hardly any power. After it warms up it runs as normal. I'm not experiencing any other problems other than that.

Thanks! Was wondering when this would happen. Will call and make an appointment in the morning. Truck just has 43,000 miles on it. My '99 went to 68,000 before VP failed, but symptoms were totally different. The '99 would not move. I can still drive this truck even though it's buckin' and snortin'.

OK, now get this. Dodge place called me today and said code was 250 starts old?? They said that truck was running fine and that they could find no problem. However the mechanic said he felt that the power was "a little weak", but should be no big deal. I picked the truck up after hours and when I started it I fogged their whole parking lot. I took this truck to a different dealer than I bought it from, because I have two other horrific tales I could tell you that have happened with us on other rigs I have bought from them since I bought this truck. I honestly can not believe this. I barely got the truck home. Anybody have any ideas. There are only two dealers within a reasonable distance from me.

i assume they reset the codes? any time you see the 1693 code, there is another code (or codes) lurking in the ECM/PCM memory. the 1693 is just a notification that there was an 'event' recorded. Also, when a code sets, it leaves a 'snapshot' of the ECM/PCM parameters and they should be able to tell what was out of whack.
