Ok well gentlemen... . I have found yet another way to break my truck.
Sat night my buddy thought it would be a good idea to try and drive through a swamp with his 1/2 ton Chev.
After he got stuck, I went to go pull him out. I put my truck in 4hi (all I should need for a 1/2ton chev), We hooked up my 8000lbs winch, I backed onto the road. I used the winch till it stalled out.
OK no biggie... . put the truck in reverse and step into it a bit... . Nothign... humm... little more... . nothing... a bit more... . Ok Got'm. Pull back forward to unhook. Wrap up the winch and hop back into the truck. Throw it into reverse... . Nothing.
Park... Reverse... nothing? OK rev it up a bit... nothing. Drop it in Drive... and away I went. I stopped just up the road to turn around... . throw it in Reverse... nothing. Of course I was on a date when this all happened... so I wasn't about to not drive the beast. I still have all forward gears. So today I got home... do a bit of reading. Talk to a couple people... .
So please help:
Here is what I have gathered. Correct me if I'm wrong.
There is the rear band and a clutch pack in the OD section that apply when the truck is in Reverse. There is also a sprag/one way clutch that is involved. When I put the truck in reverse I can feel something apply, but very very little happens. It will BAIRLY roll on a flat surface under its own power. I also have found that I have no Engine braking. Lock the trans in first, run it up to 20mph and let off, Nothing happens.
I pulled the trans pan. Fluid level and quality seem good. Check the rear band. By grabing the lever and going full apply to full disenguage it moves approx 1/4''. Is that to much? I have no visible broken pieces. Is it that sprag clutch? Which one is it? I know there are 2 in the trans, one in the front half, the other in the O/D Section.
Sorry for the long post... . I like to give all the details I can.
Josh
