Ok well gentlemen... . I have found yet another way to break my truck.

Sat night my buddy thought it would be a good idea to try and drive through a swamp with his 1/2 ton Chev. After he got stuck, I went to go pull him out. I put my truck in 4hi (all I should need for a 1/2ton chev), We hooked up my 8000lbs winch, I backed onto the road. I used the winch till it stalled out. OK no biggie... . put the truck in reverse and step into it a bit... . Nothign... humm... little more... . nothing... a bit more... . Ok Got'm. Pull back forward to unhook. Wrap up the winch and hop back into the truck. Throw it into reverse... . Nothing. Park... Reverse... nothing? OK rev it up a bit... nothing. Drop it in Drive... and away I went. I stopped just up the road to turn around... . throw it in Reverse... nothing. Of course I was on a date when this all happened... so I wasn't about to not drive the beast. I still have all forward gears. So today I got home... do a bit of reading. Talk to a couple people... .

So please help:

Here is what I have gathered. Correct me if I'm wrong.

There is the rear band and a clutch pack in the OD section that apply when the truck is in Reverse. There is also a sprag/one way clutch that is involved. When I put the truck in reverse I can feel something apply, but very very little happens. It will BAIRLY roll on a flat surface under its own power. I also have found that I have no Engine braking. Lock the trans in first, run it up to 20mph and let off, Nothing happens.

I pulled the trans pan. Fluid level and quality seem good. Check the rear band. By grabing the lever and going full apply to full disenguage it moves approx 1/4''. Is that to much? I have no visible broken pieces. Is it that sprag clutch? Which one is it? I know there are 2 in the trans, one in the front half, the other in the O/D Section.

Sorry for the long post... . I like to give all the details I can.

The rear band sounds like it is ok. 1/4" is about right for the adjustment. There is an overrunning clutch that is used in reverse. It's a plastic contraption with some rollers and springs inside the low reverse drum. If this thing is torn up I don't think the parts can get out of the drum. The springs push the rollers into the clutch cam so that it can only turn one way. That is what causes reverse rotation. You will have to tear down the trans to get to that part. If it's not the problem you should find something that is wrong in the process of taking it apart.

Well I talked to Dave Goerend today. He thinks the sprag is ok, and to pull the OD section appart and check it out. Being I have ALL forward gears the sprag should be ok. We will see!

A little off topic, but could save someone some heartache none the less. Never ever ever ever pull on the winch with your truck! I know, you do it all the time, never had a problem, so on. I used to do it all the time too. I've since lost 3 winches to it. One RE12000, one sidewinder 9000, one REP8000 (not mine) and one warn 8274-50. The RE took the abuse for a long time, finally letting stripping the spur gear (same as the sidewinder), the REP literally blew up, pieces everywhere, and the 8274 lost the clutch and over-spun the motor and lost the windings. If you do it be careful. Again, just some friendly advise.

Well after knocking myself out... . and finally getting the OD section off the trans... The reverse clutches... . all 9 of them are fried. So they will be replaced today, and hopefully back in tonite.

And no I won't be pulling with more than the winch again. If it can't do it... the truck will be turned around. Transmissions are NOT designed to pull in reverse!

I hear ya' Josh! Bad day too...

I found myself using reverse for pulling a skidloader out that I got stuck today. Had to nose my truck in towards the skidder because my back end wouldn't have fit through the fence and fence post, too narrow of an opening. Never budged the skidloader at all. All this was done with the chain on my end hooked around the tie rod bracket because I have no spots to hook onto on the front. Yes I know, bad place to hook onto but I was hot, sweaty, tired, and was running behind at work so I didn't care. Turns out the skidloader was stuck and bottomed out against a concrete slab in the ground. Got the IH 656 Hydro tractor and that wouldn't pull it out. Had to go through a couple lots to get in front of the skidder to pull it out, and then the tractor could pull it out.

All this after I got my truck stuck in the CRP checking some early beans. Thought everything seemed dry, didn't know it rained a good amount last night. Thought I was going around the low spot but I drove right in it. Felt a little hesitation so I thought, heck, put it in 4wd and i'll have no problems. Well, I was wrong. Only made myself get further in. Those Firestone MT's didn't seem to clean at all. I stopped and opened the door to find myself surrounded by water. Had to call for the Massey Ferguson to come pull me out. My rear bumper was probably well less than a foot from the ground, maybe even a half a foot. :D I should have never even tried to get myself out, just made it worse. Not buying those tires again... :p Well, this means that I have to spend another day or two cleaning my truck and crawling under it with a screwdriver and putty knife scraping off the mud from the underbody like the last time that I went through mud. Mud's kinda like... oh nevermind. ;) Point here, don't commit yourself to stuff without thinking what you're going to end up with after you get done playing with it. :-laf

Sorry to interrupt your topic Josh! Just had to vent as well... Gee, you sure have problems with transmissions don't you. ;) What's this, the third or fourth time you've been in yours? :D J/K Man! :p Let us know how it turns out! :)

Yep... 3rd time in it. This time only the OD section had to come out... not the whole trans. Got it back together now. Everything seems good, but now I have a clunk. It sounds like a bad U-joint, but they are all good. So I'm gonna drive it tomorrow and see how it goes. As usual I drove it nice for about 5 miles, then did a WOT test. Nothing came appart from that... I figure it'll hold together! :D

HHmmmph.

I will have to make a mental note of that, even if I need to make room by purging some useless movie trivia.

Actually she's a bit of a City girl. She got a kick out of our Redneck antics. The Bon-fire with a couch kind of shocked her though! :D
