I have just installed a South Bend 3600lb Dual Disc w/12 ceramic buttons. I drove it down the road for the first time and it shudders when the truck is lugged. Is this normal until the clutch is broken in.

Also, There is a vibration when the clutch is engaged while idleing but goes away when the rpm's are raised.

And when the clutch is pushed in i can here the pilot bearing. Like it is worn out. Is this just the difference in the new pilot bearing and an old input shaft being worn different.

This is my first dual disc and i was just wondering if these are normal and if they will go away during break-in.

thanks

Chris, yes this is norma, and that's not the pilot bearing you are hearing but the floater plate rattling between the two clutch disc's. ;)

I have the same things with my duel disk clutch. My weird vibration only comes in 4th gear between 1500-1700 rpm. You'll get used to the 'hiss' of your clutch and will probably do as I do to shift to neutral at all stop lights/signs. It sure does work well though!! Good luck

It's the nature of the beast. Like a rough idle with a big cam, a whiney supercharger, or loud flowmasters.

The real reason is because it's a solid disk. You should hear mine, LOL. Sounds like a really PO'd robot mountain lion.

I understand the rattle/hiss while the clutch is depressed but why are several guys, including myself, getting a noticable vibration/high pitch in a certain gear. Mine does it in 4th and I let off everytime when I get to about 1500 rpm to 1650 rpm because of it. I am just wondering, even if it is suppose to do it, why it does what it does. Thanks!

I think that's because you changed from a spring dampened hub to a solid type design.

The engine can now transmit more "vibration" to the drivetrain. (the amplitude increases)

With no springs in the discs, you are no longer damping the torsional vibrations when you pass through resonant frequencies at certain RPMs.

I am going to ask a stupid question here. (Let me put my fire proof boxers on)

We can't buy two DAMPENED disc to go into a dual disc clutch for heavy towing and street use?

I hear the solid discs tear up transmisssions.

Flame on. :-laf

Not having seen the internals of a SB DD clutch, I can only surmise that there may not be room for 2 sprung discs - the sprung discs are thicker than a clutch disc without the springs. Also, I doubt that the sprung discs are as strong - which could be a problem for a customer who spent the $$$$ for a DD clutch in the first place since the assumption is that he's going to beat on it.

Rusty

Got it.

Thanks guys.

Okay Peter, If you can jam a 3 disc clutch in the bellhousing you can make me a dual disc with dampend hubs.

We'll have a contest to name it.

I'll enter with "Soft and Smooshy" :-laf

I think most people don't want to put the bellhousing adaptor, or longer input shaft... . imagine the weight of the dual sprung discs though...

I just tore the center out of my 13" FE a month or two ago. I won't have to worry about that with my DD.

Not running a SBC but I am running a Haisleys Street Puller ( well its in my brothers truck anyway) and there is no rattling or vibration from it at all in any gear. The only noice that comes from it is the screeeeeeeech it makes when you let out the clutch but Kurt told me that will go away in a little while when it wears down the ridges. Not sure what the difference is from the actual internals between the two and not sure why the SBC does make noise.

You can't tear up a dual disc, too?

I'll try, but I don't know if I can.

I've allready tried to blow the tires away at 45MPH doing a rolling slip and launch, but my MAP sensor was acting up...
