I have an 04. 5 3500 4x4 dully, QC, SLT, 325/600, 48RE, with 3. 73 rear end.

What is the normal operating temperature for a 48RE transmission?

On the road running @ 1850RPM, 68MPH empty, my temp was running around 140/150. If I do a lot of stop and go driving in town it will go up around 170. Last week I took it in to the shop, so the district manager and his tech could look into why I was getting poor/inconsistent fuel mileage. They did not find any thing wrong, but on the way home (30 miles on the highway) I noticed that the transmission temp was @180, rather than the normal 140/150. Yesterday, I drove it to Home Depot about 2 ½ miles and before I got home the trany temp was up to 180. The trany was hotter than the water temp. Any ideas?

I would say 120 is my normal freeway driving at 70 empty. That is with ambient temps in the 75-80 range. Now the temps in the 40's I usually see a shade over 100. Pulling the 6500 lb boat on I will run 140ish. Highest I have seen is 190 for a few minutes going downhill with the boat in tow in 100 degree outside temps.

I do have the mag-hytec deep pan, and the temp sender is in the pan.

Made the same trip to Home Depot today and the transmission temp went to 190. Also, the ambient temp yesterday and today is around 65.

Remember that running to low of a temp in an automatic is almost as bad as over heating it.

The trans needs to come up to operating temps so the fluids can do their job.

My 03 Owners Manual states after 15 miles of driving, fluid should be 180*F (considering this to be normal temp and considered "hot") read this for procedures of checking fluid levels.

I have the X-Monitor with trans gauge and it's connected in with the factory sensor in the trans for read out (per their instructions). I have never seen a reading over 160*F on my X-Mointor, loaded or unloaded. I have questioned the X read out of being to low compared to what the owners manual states.

Of course though even showing low temps normal to me I would be prone to check things out if I noticed a upward trend out of my norm.
