As I was pulling into the glass shop today, doing about 25 with the clutch in and I heard a real quick whiz sound and a small pop. So I says to myself "what the heck?" and shut off the truck. I see a little smoke come out of the grill and so I open the hood and what should I see?????? A hole in the top of my gear case cover about 3" long. I once again says to myself, "Self, I think my KDP has let loose!" I shut the hood and I look under the truck and there is the infamous, no good, low down rotten KDP laying on the ground! It looked like it didn't go through the gears but rolled along between the gear and case and when the clearance got to small, it broke the case. Not sure but hoping that is the case, anywise, here come the questions!
1. Has anyone done their own repairs on this? Should I take it to the cummins dealer, stealer ect? 2. Should I try to get the stealer or cummins to do this or help pay for this repair? 3. Where can I get a service manual. 4. When you do this do you remove the core support with the intercooler, air conditioner condenser, radiator or try to work with just the fan and shroud removed? The only one I have seen done, they took off everything in the front and also the Injection pump. They left nothing on the drivers side of the engine. 5. Can the gears be replaced without removing the components? 6. If it is this far apart, are there any bombs that might be easier to do if I have any money left. (I think this takes care of most if not all of my bombing moola!)7. Had a friend tell me that if the pin did just roll on the gears and if it took any chrome off the gears, replace the gears. Correct????? 8. The new case that came out on the 98. 5s and up with the tapered hole for the KDP, can I use that one on my 97?
These are just a few questions, I'm sure to have more, but any suggestions will be more than great appreciated!
