While in the process of changing the wiper blades, I accidently hit the arm on the driver's side. It hit the windshield and made a nice round spider-web crack. There's also a single crack running up the windshield at a slight angle. All I can see is dollar signs. Oh well...

Shouldn't cost more than $300 installed. Windsheilds are one of the few thing that have actually come down in price. Better make a few calls and get a good price, not to mention the right glass.

Check around and see if the glass shops have a used one,my wife's 02 trailblazer was 300/350 new. I put a used one in with one fixed/chip repair for $130 complete/installed--out the door. Just a suggestion----with all the highway driving we do in the summer and back roads to the lake i think i"ll be putting one in every couple of years. DW

Yep, Kalifornication! Not to mention I'm up near Victimville!

If 40% of Californians are crooks, 80% of them live up here. We have yet to find a contractor (or whatever), that is honest and has a good work ethic.

I'm really concerned about finding a reliable (and honest) glass place to take my truck. If anyone can can recommend a glass shop within 100 miles, please PM me. Thanks!

DW is right. Many dealers will replace a windsheild if it has a rock chip. Call a dealer and see who they use. Our local dealer here does not do their own windsheild replacements, butuse a local glass dealer.

Good luck

Several years ago, I had to replace the glass in both front doors on my van. I just about choked when the guy quoted the price. He said something to the effect that my insurance should pick it up.

When I told him I was paying for it out of my own pocket, the price came WAY down. I think I paid about 25% of what he was going to charge if insurance covered it.

Just food for thought.

Thanks for the good ideas. I'm not going to run this thru my insurance- they'll

just increase my premiums.

I'll find out who the 'local 5 star' uses.

Regards,

Run it through your insurance ... "most" consider it too trivial of an item to up your premiums ... right along the lines of a deer accident or tree falling down. No one to really blame.

Check with your insurance. In Florida, if you have full coverage, the state forces insurance to pay 100% of windshield replacement cost. You may need to check your policy... . Good luck.

Look up Safelites 800 number. They have dealers/partners all over the country. Replaced my '06 windshield for $190 glass plus $60 labor... same day appt. at the nearest dealer/shop (Fargo at the time). National "number" will hunt down the dealer and check avail. times. Most of these guys are just as happy to come to you as having you go to a shop. Amazingly easy. Dealer will probably quote you 2-3x for the glass alone.

I actually like the new glass better than the old. The top tint is darker and the rest seems clearer. I was surprised how "green" the original looked when it was out/off the truck. Quality seems at least as good as the factory W/S, if not better. Even had the button pre mounted for the mirror.

Don't forget your stickers if you have any.

Mention them before they start.

And stand back... they work fast.

Well under an hour... done.

Website looks useful but if you call they might look a little harder for an open appt. In my case, a guy stayed at the shop while his buddies went to a lot somewhere where they had a whole days work... I think he was happy since it was about 20 below that day.

What He said, they did one in my 95 Dakota this summer for about 200 bucks with tax.

I spoke to an auto window guy once about our trucks. He said they are one of the most difficult windshields to replace because of how they're recessed at the top by the roof. He told me that if I ever needed one replaced, and the guy goes at my truck with any type of electrical tool to not let him touch the truck! He said alot of guys will use an electric saw type tool at the top to separate the windshield from the truck. When they do that, the saw damages all of the paint in the channel the window sits in. After time, the metal will just rot away from the water sitting in there.

I don't know how true this is, but the guy was not doing work for me at the time he told me so why would he make it up? So I guess I trust what he said. Who knows... I thought I'd just let you know what I've heard.
