New Ford F600

Like many of the trucks up here, it's here for cold weather validation............unfortunately, it's a dry cold and no snow to mess stuff up.

That just looks more expensive to repair/replace than a standard tailgate. Not sure I see the benefit of it but they aren't the only one's with tailgate gimmicks these days.

I wish that they would have set it up the opposite way, with the latch on the short side instead of the long. It wouldn't look good that way but I think it would be more functional.

One of the things I could see as a use is the ability to open a side when you have a trailer hooked up. My travel trailer and hitch combination doesn't allow me to drop the gate when hooked. If the short side held the primary latch, you would be able to open it and it would swing wide of the tongue jack. Its hard to tell from the picture, but with the latch on the long side, it may still hit the jack before you would get enough room to swing the short side open.

I think back to my old Suburbans. One had a tail gate and an electric roll down window, the other had a pair of doors that opened. I had the gated Burb after the one with the doors and hated it. Much easier to access the back without having to lean over a tailgate. Also, loading atvs and bikes in the back would be easier, swing the gate open, set the ramps on the bumper and go. I refuse to load off of the gate, seen too many straps break over the years to risk trashing a gate. My locking tailgate is a bit of a PITA to remove for such tasks. I miss the old school steel straps that tailgates used to have!

Do they give a weight rating to the tailgates? A non rusted 05 tailgate could take 450 lbs on a size 12 boot sole. I would be very wary of doing that with a two piece tailgate.

I hope they keep a standard tailgate as an option. Vehicles are getting too carried away with gimmicks any more.

I very gingerly step on my tailgate now. Nothing like the old ones.

I'm half afraid to even stand on the gate of my aluminum Ford. I haven't had any problems with it. But, it is so light, it makes you wonder how strong it it.

A good friend told me a story about her brothers new F250, just happened. While on a sledding trip, a passenger unfamiliar with his truck, opened the door in the wind.....wind caught the door and buckled it pretty good. He was p'oed to say the least. I was relieved that I talked myself out of that truck. I wish all the manufacturers would give us more metal and a lot less plastic.

Hell, the old steel doors did it too! My 2006 F550 on the North Slope had nylon straps installed during PDI/Upfit so the doors don't get ripped off in the wind. They'd go clear around to the front fender with a decent wind blowing.

Stronger than the Tundra's. Guys loading toys with ramps found that out. Junk. I like the new tailgate.
