For the guys that are on the fence about the starter rebuild kit. you might wanna check out my contacts that came out. Actually, only one was bad, the other wasn't in too bad of shape. The truck only has 155,000 miles on it. The hardest part about the whole deal is getting to the top starter bolt. Even that wasn't bad. Piece of cake. You will need a 10mm 12 pt socket to take the starter bolts out. The nut holding the battery cable on is a 5/8. Not sure what size the little bolt holding the little wire on the solenoid is, I used a pair of pliers.

The bolts holding the contact studs are 17mm.

Symptoms were, starter hanging up after the engine was started, and sometimes I would only get a click when I turned the key.

The kit isn't just a pair of contacts, it has the plunger, contact studs, insulators, nuts, just about eveything in the solenoid.

Nice pics!

Heck, you got some more life left on that contact! Mine was PAPER thin when I took 'em out.....

These starters are so easy to remove/put back in and rebuild... . it doesn't pay to just hope it will get better..... get the stuff... . rebuild it... . and drive on.

Matt

On edit: The solenoid wire is an 8mm, or 5/16"... . depends on what you like better... . metric or SAE. :D

Just did mine a couple weeks back looked same as above brushes were half worn replaced them because it was open anyhow. Ditto on symtoms too Nice pics, I gotta get a camera but ... same $ as injectors :)

I got mine in a local Starter rebuild and electrical warehouse.

Took it of took it to them and on of the rebuilders spot welded two brushes on for me and I did the rest.

I think these are the same starter as run on 4 cyl john deeres. Maybe different teeth on the ring but contacts an all should be the same.

$25 beats the $200 + the joy of getting under and playing with my truck "priceless"

Nice job Gitchesum

Thanks for the info and pics on something most of us will have to fix sooner or later. I need a cam like yours;)

Check your Yellow Pages, almost any starter/alternater rebuilder will have thos parts in stock. Contacts alone are about $10. 00 and is usually all you need.

Yep looks familiar. I just did mine this weekend as well. I used the contacts from another starter I had laying around and mixed and matched the parts though. why is it the battery side burns up twice as fast?

Anybody have a place they care to plug? I would like to rebuild the starter I left on the bench for a spare. when this one gives out again in another 229,000 miles.

I got my parts from United Auto Electric in Fitchburg, MA... . they are right around the block from where I go to school... so I figured I'd give 'em a try. Nice folks, good prices, and had plenty of stuff to rebuild our starters in stock.

As for the one contact wearing out faster than the other... it has to do with the flow of electrons. It's just like arc/mig/tig/etc. welding... . the rod/wire/etc. wears down and the material you're welding doesn't. The flow of electrons goes from the really worn down contact... . through the plunger... . and over to the second contact and into the starter motor.....

HTH,

Matt

I bought the kit from the outfit in Arizona. I got the entire rebuild kit. Granted, most of the stuff I replaced was still in pretty good shape, I went ahead and replaced everything.

Diesel Electric in Arizona. 520. 836. 8231. 29. 50 plus S&H.

This kit includes the plunger, springs, insulators, contact studs, contacts and the washers and bolts needed.
