Besides gear ratios, what's the difference between the 94-97 NV4500's and the 98-02 NV4500's? How come you can't put a 98-02 short shifter on a 94-97 NV4500? Is it just the interior stuff? I love my standard transmission, but I don't really care for the extremely long throws.

Thanks in advance

JacobsD,

This is down the same alley on another thread that I am dealing with. Here might be your answer from tlgdiesel. I think it might have to do with the transmission top. If there are any more answers, someone else will have to provide them. Hope this helps

They didnt use the newer top cover until 1998 in the dodges. All the 1994-1997's had the shifter boot with a big hole. The 1998 5 speeds went to a console and different shifter boots for the different shifters. What you are asking for dose not exist. I used a chevy shifter and tower when I converted mine because the chevy shifter is fat at the bottom and fits great. The chevy shifter wont thread on to the dodge shift tower though because it uses bigger threads. The dodge and chevy top covers are the same but not the tower with the 4 bolts. Chevy started using the newer top cover in 1995 where dodge didn't until 1998.

The newer NV 4500 has a removable shifter by the use of 4 bolts,

This one is mine with a short throw shifter that I made and copied off of BD's

Hopefully you can see in this picture of an older NV 4500 the shifter comes out by pressing down and twisting the shifter and ther is no provisions to put any kind of spacer or to lengthen the shifter

I hope I explained myself good enough:)

There is no difference in gear ratios in the dodge nv4500. The chevy one ran different ratios prior to 1995. There is a big difference just changing to the newer top cover and shifter. The throws are much closer and the pattern is tighter. Some people dont like the short shift kit for the 98-02's. They feel its too close, I cant comment on that cause I never used it. I was happy with the amount of change changing the top cover provided and didn't feel it was necessary to add the short shifter.

So how much of an ordeal is it to swap over the tops? Could I go to Mopar and buy a top? I know about the twist out style after I did my clutch and it took me some time to figure out how to do that.

If I were to convert it, all I would need is a top and a shifter, correct?
