In researching lube oil for the NV4500 (yes, I know all about the Castrol Syntorq vs. other oils issue), I keep seeing references to brass synchros. This is usually in a context of how any oil other than Castrol Syntorq will damage them.

However, Dave Fritz's page describes the synchros as being carbon fiber composite--so which is correct? Are they brass, or are they composite?

Thanks,

Mike

The body of the syncro is brass but they are lined on the wear surface with a composite material. I don't know that I'd call it "carbon fiber" but it is a composite.

I run Redline manual trans lube in mine. It is a few dollars less per quart and it is better in my opinion. It is also a fully synthetic lube.

Depending on which gears, its made out of diffrent materials. 1st and 2nd are some kind of composite friction material on silver rings. 3 and 4 are solid brass and 5th and reverse are a black fiber (carbon?) on black rings.
