On build sheet it says i have the nv4500hd transmission what is the difference in it and the regular nv4500. Has anyone used a LUK clutch before thankx

The standard duty nv4500 was only used in GM gas or diesel and small block Dodge. The HD NV4500 was always used in Dodge diesel and V10 options.

The main difference is the input shaft, GM and Dodge small block used a 1 1/8" and the hd used 1. 250" with some ratio differences, bellhousing and output shaft spline count.

Yes, and most everyone on here uses Southbend Clutches. . I have had several, and finally wound up with a Dual Disk 3600# plate load clutch, and it has way better manners than my single disk FE... I would highly recommend Southbend, not only for their clutches, but also their amazing customer service.

I'm looking at pulling all the manual guts from a junkyard truck. Was a gasser not sure if the v10 variant but like said above will the bellhousing of the regular nv4500 not mate to the cummins? Or the output shaft/input shaft? i plan on
Pulling the transfer case to. Pretty sure the truck is a v8 so it would have the regular nv4500. Just want to know if I should not waste time on this. Even if the transmission wouldn't work I would still pull the pedals stick and maybe transfer case. Does the hd 4500 have a different transfer case than the regular? Thanks

This is another excellent reason to purchase a factory service manual. It lists every gearbox and what they are mated to. It also gives a synopsis of the differences. Available from Genos.

Okay already got it. Guess ill do some reading in the morning.

Alright so I know I'll need a nv4500 hd version but does anyone know If the clutch/brake pedals and stick shifter from a 1/2 ton will work? If so ill pull those items and get the transmission from another source.

The pedals will be the same. The shifter, depending on the year of the NV4500, is either a spring loaded push and turn into the top of the trans, or is mounted to a plate that bolts to the top of the trans. My guess about the stick shifter is that it's a definite maybe.

Okay thanks games. I did some more reading in the fsm and my year 96 stick would have the spring type with the turn. Do you think I'll need the two special tools mentioned in the fsm 6780&6783 for removing the shift lever extension and the retainer?
I'm going back to the junkyard to definitely remove the components that I know I can use such as the master cylinder, reservoir, slave cylinder, etc. dumb question but is the clutch housing the same as the front housing of the 47re? I m guessing not. I thought I read somewhere that the auto and the manual shared some identical housing. Thanks!

The piece that goes between the automatic bellhousing and the engine is the same as the NV4500. (the piece the starter mounts to, have forgotten it's technical name. Most call it an adapter). You will need a bellhousing along with the 5 speed. I believe the transfer case input splines are different, just working from memory there. A pr of flat screwdrivers have been used on many occasions to R&R the shift lever. You might be interested in this

Thanks to the info games! I realize I might need a different transfer case. I wonder if I can just change out the input spline on mine to fit the nv4500.

bradyw, I believe the orignal clutch was a Luk. Southbend and I read (TDR issue) where Advance has a Clutch from Precision Clutch that will take extra torque.
