Well for the past years I have been able to search for all the questions I have had and find definitive answers for until now. So thanks to everyone for all the information in the past. I have been searching on information on fluid change intervals for the NV5600 and found that alot of guys are changing fluid every 30k or so and adding an extra quart for the rear output bearing. But now when I refer to my owners manual the maintence schedules(both A and B schedules) do not indicate when to change the fluid. Also the buyers guide states

"Six-Speed NV5600 Manual Transmission (used from ‘00-

’05): This transmission is filled with manual transmission fluid at the factory. This fluid does not require periodic changing. "

I was wondering if someone could explain to me why such the large discrepancy in information.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, my '01 book says the same thing as does my '91 w/Getrag 360, however I change both every 36,000 miles with standard 15/40 engine oil, standard fill.

I have no clue why the books say that, unless they are afraid we might use 90 wt, like in the old days:)

I think this may be one of those cases where "ease of maintenance" won out over common sense.

Most of us change the oil in the transmission because, well, it sure seems like a good idea! Especially once you see what's accumulated on the magnet!

The manual says no regular changes for the transfer case, either. Most of us ignore that bit of wisdom too.

Marketing ploy.

I have found that going past 100,000 miles on the NV5600 without changing oil leads to the synchros getting dirty and not working well. At least for towing half of those miles anyway. Now I simply change it at 100,000 miles like clockwork.

Godspeed,

Ding, ding, ding...

We have a winner ! Trent, have you ever considered installing a trans temp gauge ?

The first oil change on mine was at 70k. It was getting down right tough getting it in gear. After the change it ran great. I am at 117K now and might change it before winter time just to keep it happy in the cold weather.

On a resent Thread, "Differential oil change intervals", I asked the same question on differentials and NV5600 six speed transmissions. I received no responses.

Quote; The Owner's Manual say to change the front and rear axle fluid every 15K miles under Schedule "B", however under Schedule "A", which is more where my truck is driven, it never says to change the fluid but to merely check the level of the manual transmission and transfer case. I may tow heavy only 20% of the time.

I don't mind changing the fluid more often, but the Owner's Manual is very vague between Schedule A and B.

Same applies to Manual transmission. Schedule "B" says to change fluid every 75K miles on the G56 manual transmission only. No schedule is made to change the fluid on my transmission, which is the NV5600.

What gives, george

Just wondering if others are seeing what I consider to be high operating temps.

With FastCoolers and Redline MTL, I see a max of about 210*F... most times I see about 100*F over the ambient temps (if air temps are 50*F, I see a trans temp of 150*F).

Thats good info to know, those aren't bad temps at all. I want to install a temp gauge with a switch for 2 senders, diff and trans. Even if the switch changes the reading by a few deg its still a good indication when something goes wrong.

210* is actually an okay temp, it ensures all the moisture is boiled off.

Steve, is that towing anything ? During the summer I can max the gauge at 250 with the truck by itself ! Last weekend on a trip to PHX with the race trailer, it did see about 220-230 with only an ambient temp of about 65*.

Towing makes little difference. I towed 10k across PA earlier this summer, never broke 210*F.

I have verified my gauge readings with a handheld IR thermometer, not to mention this is the second gauge that I have used on this trans. The first gauge/sending unit saw 235*F once, but that was prior to FastCoolers.

My sending unit is in the PTO cover.

Yep, have my sensor in the cooler cover also. Have them in both trucks, even swapped senders between the two and no change. NV 4500 in the '93 rarely ever sees above 170* in the heat of summer by itself, haven't towed anything worthwhile with it during the heat though. Now with the cold weather here it hasn't seen above 125 in weeks .

I went to change my oil and the plug looks like it uses a 19mm hex wrench to get it off. Am I at the right plug? If so, where do I get one of these wrenches?

I want to remember its 17mm and that I got mine from a local Ace Hardware... I believe you can also get them from Geno's Garage.

A wrench can be made from a bolt with a head that fits into the plug and then two nuts tightened against each other on the bolt. Simply put the head of the bolt into the plug and use a wrench on the nuts to loosen or tighten the plug.

Godspeed,
Trent
