Transmission upgrade question

My first question is, are there any good rebuilders in the S. F Bay Area who are as good as Standard.

The reason that it is going out started as soon as I put in the heavy duty Southbend clutch. There have been articles about clutch replacement and have always said Southbend was the way to go. They also said that engine vibration would now haceeffect the trans. due to the extra heavy springs in the disk. Well after about 15000 milesw all the bearings, sound like they are square. I drive the truck for construction work every day. There are no power or other modifcations.

I had to replace the OEM clutch at 110,000 miles, whichseemed early for me because I have a 1990 350 4x4 that has 390,000 on it and still does'nt need a clutch.

Thanks

I've got about 35~40k+ on my SBC and an extra 100HP without any ill effects. I've never read of stiffer springs in the SBC hastening it demise either.
I admit I don't like the clutch but there were few choices at my HP level back then.

I'm wondering if there was a problem with the install or maybe there's a broken spring. Or maybe the HD bearing wasn't installed. At any rate, SBC is very responsive and I would call them with your symptoms. They may be able to help in some way.

It's out of the ordinary for an NV-5600 to fail with relatively low miles and unless you're sidestepping the clutch drag racing or sled pulling the clutch shouldn't have much effect. Mine lasted over 300k miles before it suffered from poor lubrication and the big center bearing failed.

There are two rebuilders of NV-5600 manual transmissions. That's Standard in Ft. Worth and Blumenthal in OKC. There are good rebuilders and cheap local rebuilders but no good cheap local rebuilders I've ever heard of.

I agree with HBarlow for NV transmission builders.

My NV5600 lost its clutch at 120k and replaced it with another OEM clutch. I'm approaching 230k and it will need to replaced again soon.

I was talking to Standard about 3 week ago and they said that the syncros were on national back order for the NV5600. Have not been able to get any since Feb and have units on the shop floor waiting for parts!. Just one of the reasons we traded up to our new 2012. Didn't want to have a rather large red paper weight!

The heavy duty clutch will make the gears sound like a pig eating marbles, thats normal. The weak torque springs of the stock clutch will dampen the noise. The rumble/growl at idle with warm oil and shutdown noise is normal with heavy duty clutch disks. Does the noise go away as you bring the engine up past idle? If it does and your oil shows no contamination, I would run it.

I'm headed out to brake something on my truck. Maybe itll help convince the wife to let me buy a new one.

This only works if you break somthing that is no longer available, but be aware because if she still says no you are stuck with a broken truck!!#@$%!

And a truck with near zero trade or resale value.

I wonder if a growing shortage of NV-5600 rebuild part is permanent or temporary. If no aftermarket company gears up to make quality replacement transmission parts for those trucks lots of otherwise good Ram trucks are going to become dinosaurs over the next several years.

I doubt this is nothin more than the Bosch injector back order saga. Just takes time to catch up... ... ... ... ... I hope.

It can't be quite that simple. Bosch is still in business and is likely to be for many years to come.

NV shut down and disappeared years ago. I believe that up until recently Blumenthal and Standard have been able to locate OEM NV parts to rebuild the NV-5600s. If an aftermarket manufacturer doesn't set up and begin making the internal parts what happens then?

For once I'm glad I have the auto! But, I fear the same for the NV3550 in my Jeep. It is the same company (obviously) and it's use was limited to the Jeep Wrangler, a few Cherokees and Dakota's, and only for like 4-5 years. So, that would make it less attractive to aftermarket companies.
