We just finished swapping my sons ‘94 2500 from an auto to an NV5600. There are no ports in the trans for a temp sensor. If I drilled and tapped the fill plug, would that be too high up for the sensor? We will be adding two extra quarts of fluid and never plan on using the fill plug as we will add fluid thru the tower.

I drilled and threaded my left side pto cover. It is thick enough to make good threads. I used 1/8" pipe thread. Just be sure you don't go too deep with the tap and loose your taper.

I would recommend one of the transmission cooler kits that:
1) Already have a temp port tapped.
2) Have a way to check the level with 2 extra quarts added.
3) Optional. The FASS coolers also have a filter kit available.

I could only install the cooler on one side on my 2003 2WD from a clearance problem. I forget what, likely aftermarket, was in the way. The amount of debris the string filter caught was impressive.
