I like the 2nd - 3rd shift, but the 3rd - 4th is a Pain, upshifting isn't too bad, downshifting is a strain to go into gear,, Maybe I'm pulling the shifter sideways?? or over to far,, it doesn't want to sink into the synchros. But the trany is still new and the harder I run it the easier it shifts.



KChristopher, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe he means 33K right now ?? or maybe 19K when he took it in ??

Anyone know what is the technical issue behind this TSB? What exactly are they replacing or changing to fix the cold grind problem?

They actually replace the countershaft assembly if they can't rebuild it on site.



to rebuild the assy takes the 20ton press.



They basically rework the transmission end to end before they get done.

dude, dont sweat it, the more miles you put on it the better. Mine did a little grinding when new, scared the craap out of me the first time. I figured what the heck drive it like you stole it if it gets worse off to the stealer. got 20,000 hard hard miles, several runs down the strip, not to mention hotrodding around town, and it is shifting better and better as the miles go on.

If it was grinding it still will if its cold. a nice 6* morning and you'll be thinking it's new again.



Mine did the same thing. a month or so ago we had a real cold spell and the transmission was grinding like never before.



When the mechanic opened the transmission to do my clutch he found enough shavings that I insisted the dealer take a look at it. That's when I found out about the TSB.



They had $1500 in parts alone. . I'd hate to see the labor bill.



I hope you don't have trouble but I'd open the side of it and take a look. Save the fluid to show the dealer in case ther's a problem.



Mine was a QT low when they opened it for the clutch.

Yup - what Mark said...

It's a cold weather thing and I don't think mine is getting any better. What is happening is it's warming up outside and it doesn't seem to do the grind at temperatures above 30f. Maybe DC will suggest not shifting below 30f, who knows? I try not to expect too much from them



I'm getting on my dealer tomorrow with the TSB#, otherwise if it gets too warm they won't be able to reproduce the problem and I'll have to wait till next fall.

My dealer did not even bother to try because temps were too high and there is a TSB stating so.



Hopefully they will see it for the same and do you right.

My truck never really had a grind into 3rd, but once in a while you could feel in the stick like you were pushing the gears to get them to mesh, 99% of the time though it's perfectly smooth. I swear the transmission shifted better after the addition of the BD pnp2, maybe the extra torque seated the gears. One thing I do know is that the syncros are very picky on downshifts, they won't let you go into too low of a gear.

Hey Rich-if it's grinding it's not right..... mine has only ground when I've screwed up letting out the clutch just a little too quick . Keep on your dealer-or find another one... . too bad you weren't closer to Hillbilly Flats out here-pretty sure you could get satisfaction at my dealer. These trucks cost way too much money-don't accept any less than correct operation-and correct is without a grind!

I turned the TSB # over the stealer today after looking it up on the feds website lastnight.



The dealer didn't know about it and had to call the Chrysler tech line! As of 5pm today, they had not heard back.

Mine has never ground but is still tight, even after 50K miles. I drove a friend's a few months ago and couldn't believe how broken in it is. I'm not complaining though, I'm happy it's tight.



Just interesting how much these vary.

what shift problem?

I have a 99 6spd 3500 and the only time it grinds when I am not paying attension when shifting cold or warm makes no diff. It does shift kind of stiff at various times but no grinds that are not caused by me. One thing I work in a shop and do warrenty work on our own trucks trucks are made by man and anything that is made so will brake at some point do to no one being perfect dealers are just like anyother bussiness they try to make money and keep there costumers happy, some do some don,t ! As a mechanic not all ( fixes) are set in stone untill tsb or campaign come out I have seen a lot of problems start with only one truck and develop in to the rest of a group of trucks with know one noticing till we have alot of pi$$t off drivers and by that time tsb or campaign is almost written and send out from manufactur.

I guese I just got a good transmission! 175K on trk. , 146K on this transmission and no problems, has never shifted hard nor ground a gear, and I've been in -10*temps. It was replaced at 29K because brg. went out of reverse gear, and would drop out of gear when backing up if you would let off of accelerator pedal, at that time the dlr. had no parts, so they installed new transmission.

For the record it's definitely not sloppy clutching that causes the grind. After reading the TSB I tested it at about -15c outside. Rev to 2700 in 3rd, clutch right to the floor, gentle-to-normal pull into 4th and GRIND. I could get 3 or more solid grinds at consecutive stoplights until the trans warms up enough for the syncro's to start grabbing. Strange that I can't make it grind at all once it warms up. I wonder if it's an issue with internal clearances that come into spec when the trans is warmed up?



Jason - I bought this truck in Red Deer so I'm travelling 2 hours anyways to my original dealer. If they don't cooperate I'll try your shop as it's only a little further.

Which one in Red Deer Rich-Southside or Northwest? I've never had work done at either-but the salesmen at Southside were about 35 times better to deal with than Northwest when I was looking at used Jeeps-I wouldn't give Northwest the rag I used to dry my 'nads off with .....

Does anyone know why they put six speeds in the earlier trucks (I think '99's) for a while, and then they quit offering them? They had some problem with the transmission, then fixed it (supposedly), and then offered them again behind the HO's. What was the original problem? Is their any TSB's for those trannys that might apply to ours?



Mine was fine until I got to 4300 miles and then it got so it doesn't want to shift so smooth. I have a cold 2-3 grind, but once it warms up that goes away. But it still shifts hard going into gear. It was REALLY bad for a while, like you almost had to let the RPMs back to idle before it would go into the next gear. Down shifting was not possible. I have 10,000 miles on it now, and its a little better, but not right yet.



The dealer had it for a week, and "couldnt reproduce the problem". I asked them if they even drove it. "yeah, it shifts like the other six speeds". I gave up...

Just curious, I have an HO also with no problems for a year now. Has anyone tried bleeding the clutch to see if their problem goes away? I guess you could expect it to grind in all gears if that was the case. Any thoughts?

If you have the problem we speak of IT IS NOT CLUTCH/SHIFTACTION RELATED.



You can run to 3K, put the clutch to the floor and gently pull from 3-4 and it WILL grind.



The counter shaft assembly is defective in these trucks requiring AT LEAST a rebuild.

BTW,, The clutch hydraulics are non-bleedable. They are a one piece unit. If they go bad you have to buy a new one from Dodge, they come fully built (one piece) full of lfuid, and are just a bolt on operation.



I've replaced mine before.
