I haven't had the problem, yet, but I would think that it would make for a bad day, if one would drop his nut (s).

Rob. .

Its my understanding that the reason the nut works loose and causes failure is from lugging the engine loaded and unloaded. Exactly what those RPM #'s are I don't know. Maybe some one can fill the forum in. I know if mine fails once warranty is has expired, and requires more than the nut, that truck gets a new home I'll trde it in to another dealer.

You have more miles on your truck than Brigham Young had wives and more experience driving than anyone I know.
My question is this: If the 5th gear nut hasn't failed, shouldn't I fix it BEFORE it does? If the answer is "no" won't waiting until it does go south likely damage the splines on the output shaft?
Thanks.

My '97 rarely hauls/tows over 2ooolbs, but I run it up and down Donner Summit& The Grapevine in 5th gear all the time. I run the summits hard,if I start @1900/2000rpm,if the Chips/traffic are clear, I'll accelerate from there - reaching 90-95/Donner;80-85/Grapevine(it's a harder pull since I went to the 285's). Some times because of the afformentioned I'll lose the sweet spot(2k-2. 5k rpm)and I'll notice the harmonics Joe talks about @ 1800rpm and below. I never liked how this "felt" and almost always grabbed 4th. I haven't had any trouble with the NUT so far #ad
(62k/mi). So my ? to the "BOMB SQUAD" is when mine breaks can I replace 5th gear with a taller one? I'm in the process of BOMBING right now and for my style of driving I could use it right now(don't have the $$$ to pop for the US Gear OD unit right now. BOMB-ON "The Green Hornet"
