NYS DOT gone crazy

well they have started to ticket pickups registered over 10k without a DOT number. this same unit also was ticketing pickups with lumber in the back for unsecured loads. whats next?

My brother has a towing business upstate NY, last time we were talking he told me that is happening . Just some more revenue for the politicians retirement. .

Sounds like they are following the law not gone crazy. Ever been behind a truck that lost it's load? Not fun. And if people are using pickups to get around a 10k GVW law for commercial purposes then tough luck.



Way too many people overload trucks (and unsafely secured). Count how many 1/2 tons you see on the road with a large camper or a trailer more suited to a 3/4 or 1 ton. Or even 1 tons carrying way too much.

So many trucks around here don't even run commercial plates and our local PD do not seem to care.

This was happening around the Palmyra, NY exit where all the NYC garbage trucks get off.



I get ****** when someone says "well thats the law", I have found that there are millions of laws, and a lot don't make any sense, are not just or fair, and have nothing to do with protecting the public. The law tries to accommodate ever possible circumstance, far as I am concerned its just a way to make money. you will always have Jack doing something stupid, so lets make a law. ya keep doing that.

If you are hauling commercially (IE; carpenter/landscaper in company truck hauling materials to a jobsite) and you are not following the law then you deserve the ticket if you are targeted. They are just trying to keep everyone safe.



personal vehicle, hauling personal camper is exempt from commercial laws like stopping at weigh stations etc. But everybody has to properly secure their loads and not run overloaded. how is that so hard to understand?



Illinois law says I have to tow on the interstate at 55MPH if I weigh more than 4 tons. I dont, but deserve the ticket when I get one.

Neither if you are personal..... only if commercial.

If you are in commerce ie real commercial use you need a dot #. NY you can't register a pickup over 5500lbs with out commercial plates. . so the commercial plates should mean little its how the vehicle is actually used that makes the difference.

Out here in Cal, every truck ,whether its a mini truck or a full size truck is issued commercial plates.

More income for the legislators to steal for their pet projects.

first haveing a bunch of 2x4's in the bed of your pickup does not deserve a ticket, second in NYS if you truck is registered over 10k you need a dot number, no matter what the use.



my point about useless laws and poorly written laws, is now there is a large gray area which the officers are not sure how to enforce. In NYS there are different laws if you are on a county road or a state road, etc.



so if your a sheep keep making laws thinking there for your safety, soon the color of your truck will be cause for a ticket.

So, what are you saying? That Mr. and Mrs. John Doe who go out and buy a dually and a 36' 5th wheel RV have to have a DOT number in New York? Texas specifically exempts RVs from commercial regulations.

what sort of dot number... . NY DOT? USDOT? USDOT is only for commercial vehicles, be it FOR hire or not for hire.

I agree, I think it is a commercial only sort of thing... I'd fight it if I got nailed and wasn't overweight. I think that is the majority of it right there... most times I see them going and they are significantly overweight...

Can you please add the reference for this statement. Get a copy of the ticket or cite the NYS law that I would be violating. I frequently travel to NY with my 12K trailer and 14K registered dually and I'd be interested to know what law I am in violation of. Thanks Ken Irwin

US DOT number now required on vehicles over 10,001 pounds



New state regulations require that all trucks, including those with agricultural plates, that have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) (whichever is greater) of 10,001 pound or more must be marked with a US DOT number.



THESE TRUCK MARKINGS NEED TO BE APPLIED BY JULY 5, 2006.



The only exemption that agriculture has from these regulations is for trucks weighing less than 26,000 pounds that are registered with a ‘farm plate’ and driven only within New York State.



NYSDOT
