Anybody used one of the $150 scan tools from auto-zone? My wifes car is acting up and I just need to read the codes...

What kind of car? If it is a GM you can read the code with a paper clip. You just find the plugin under the dash and place one end into the right upper corner and the other end into the slot nest to that one. Turn the key on and count the flashes of the engine light. It will flash, for example, two fast flashes a pause then three more fast flashes, for 23. It will repeat this 3 times then give you another number. It will do this till there is no more codes and then start over again.

Hope this helps. If it is a Ford product, good luck. They want you to have to bring it back to the dealer for repairs. Look at how you have to get the codes even with a scannar. Turn wheel to left, center the wheel, step on the breaks, and so on and so on then all you get is codes.

it's a gm, but it's got the obd-2 connection so the paperclip trick won't work (her's is the first year they started using the obd2 connection). The old (paperclip) style obd1 readers are 20 bucks, the obd2 are 150 :( ... thinkin of just driving it into the lake...

Drop me a PM we could hook up over in CP in the next couple of days. I have a friend that works at a shop there and he will let me use his snap on MT2500 for nothing.

I've used one with some success on my wifes car (98 Escort ZX2). Some of the codes were not in the accompanying manual - or the Chiltons manual for that matter. Had to consult the dealer for those. In any case, it has been accurate thus far.

Who's the U-Boat Commander?

I bought an 88 F150 in '90 and drove it for 4 years and had it slide down a boat ramp into Lake Texoma until only an inch of antenna was out of the water. The insurance company gave me $1500 more than what I paid for it 4 years earlier. My recommendation, the lake. It worked good for me but it would probably be a little more believable if you have a boat trailer behind it.

Up scope!

OBD ScanTool

Warning... .

If your thinking about ordering ScanTool from Harrison R&D be advised...

1. Even though they call one of their options a "Universal" scanner, it will only work with Dodge CTD if you order the Dodge Cummins model. From what I understand, it will only work on the Cummins.

2. They don't list Cummins or Dodge as a specific option, but they have one that works if you tell them when ordering. Unfortunately, my understanding is that it will not work on any other vehicle. They still want the $140 for the this Dodge Cummins "universal" model, versus the $110 for a single application.

3. This would be a good tool to have around, but if it won't work on more than one model vehicle, it isn't nearly as useful... :(
