At 165,000 miles I expected a major chore seperating the housings but using the "bolt jacking" method described in the 1st gen forums it came apart easy. Everything went back together smoothly and the exhaust system mod was a piece of cake. I had the local muffler shop make a connector 4" long that was swaged at both ends to fit the 3" pipe and it went right together. pics available of connector. The dreaded turbo lag is almost non existent near as I can tell. It drives about the same as before, maybe a slight lag. EGTs are way down now. A hard run through 4th will barely get me into 1400 where before it was 1550 easy. Boost was 30lbs before the housing change and now is 35lbs. Total time was 2 hours. Didnt have anybody to talk to, had to keep busy.

I too have the 16 cm2 housing and like it. Could you post the pics of the connector? I'm going to have a 3" stainless exhaust made up and I'm wondering what kind of connector is needed.

Thanks,

Blake

I assume this is because the 12 was a wastegate housing and the 16 is none wastegate. The wastegate on the 12 was a least partially opening and venting some boost?

Ya know as I read this thread again, I have one more question/observation. 417 rwhp and only 30psi of boost:( :( Seems like it should be more than that. -- How about 417HP and a 16 housing and 35psi. Does this sound consistent with others? -- I only wonder because my meager little 300hp does 34psi ( PDR HX35 / 14 wastegate housing ).

Do you know of any muffler shops in Waco that can bend 4" exhaust pipe? Im in the proces of changing my from 3" to 4". Havent had much luck on finding a shop that can bend 4".

Hey Justin

No I dont know of anyone around here who can bend 4", maybe buy some U bends and cut them to fit. See ya at the dyno.

If you are having a system made you wont need my connector as it is for when you need to cut the existing pipe and move it forward 1. 5" . The connector allows you to rejoin these pieces with the 1. 5 gap in it. If you still want to see the pic I will be happy to post it.

Good eye, you saw the boost vs HP thing. The 417HP was with the plate full forward, it makes 40lbs that way even with a wastegated housing. The TST boost elbow allows it to do so even with the wastegate. It hits 40 for a second or so and then stabilizes at 36lbs. Gonna be interesting when I slide the plate forward again. I had it back to keep a lot soot off the travel trailer on vacation.

Deezul 1, I would like to see a picture of your connecter. I have a 16 housing on the bench waiting to go on my 94 standard cab. I was told I wouldn't need anything to convert, just push the exhaust pipe foreward.

Thanks

Michael

Michael, all I've ever had to do is just move the pipe. A couple of times have had to cut the first hanger just ahead of where the cat is/was and reweld it in a different place. Sawzall works great.

Thanks Deezul 1. I guess what I need to find out is not what the adaptor looks like, but how the pipe actually connects to the turbo. I never really looked on mine, but I want to be sure the exhaust guy has the parts and knows what to do before he tears mine apart.

Where the pipe hooks to the turbo there is round flange with a flat face, kinda looks like the base of a rifle cartridge. The turbo has the same flange and there is a band that goes around this are with a V in it to clamp them together. look at the back of the turbo and you can see the band clamp.

After hearing some of the stories about fighting that front hanger trying to pull the pipe forward, this looks like the way to go. Considering that my PDR HX 35 16cm is due to go in this weekend, the timing is great. Looks I'll be ordering a connector tomorrow.

Update

Slide the plate all the way forward, runs stronger, EGTs still go too high but do it a lot slower, more smoke under hard throttle. Its about time to back off the AFC spring now that I am not towing for a while and maybe that will bring back the bottom end more.
