Okay Guru’s,
I too am having Overdrive problems. I have been searching the archives and I have found a ton of good information, but I still have not been able to figure this out. Here is the short version. I have neglected my transmission, “my bad”, but I have only pulled a ski boat about a dozen times, otherwise just highway miles. Anyway, A year ago, first time OD slip was while entering the freeway late at night. Over the last year (once a month), OD slipped on freeway onramp, but it always reengaged. Two weeks ago, same symptoms, but this time never shifted up. So I dropped pan, fluid was black. No major chunks in the pan. I changed filter and fluid. Still no OD. I have followed a lot of your advice. Cleaned contacts and applied dielectric to speed sensor connector, temp connector, TPS connector, OD connector (on top of transmission), PCM connections. Pulled pan again, turned to “on” position without starting and used probe to see if there was power to OD solenoid itself. Bright light on one lead of solenoid, none on the other. Pushed OD switch, bright light on same side and dim light on the other lead. Checked voltage at TPS with an old volt meter. Not sure about exact voltage, but there was a change as the throttle was opened. I did notice that there was no power to the fluid temp gauge lead when I had it disconnected (not sure what that means). Buttoned her back up and no change. I have only talked to transmission shops and was told I would need a OD clutch and total transmission overhaul. I have also been informed if there is no OD it will be just an electrical issue. Where would a lame-o wrencher go from here? I’m assuming, the transmission shop, but I don’t want to be taken for a financial ride. Here are my stats. 93 LE, W250, AC works, cruise works (holds anywhere 35-60MPH, but if set over 60 it will always slide back to 60MPH), brake switch has already been addressed, speedo has no problems. 217000 miles, Transmission had been replaced at 150000. I would think a transmission with basic driving should last longer than 70K. What do y’all think.
