So the check engine light comes on today while driving into work. My drive is about 50 miles of 4 lane highway with the cruise set at 70 and then 20 miles of big city traffic. I noticed the light just as I was approaching the city. When I was slowing down for the first stop light the truck stumbled and shuddered, but then behaved fine the rest of the way. While on the highway with the cruise on I noticed no odd behavior and all of the gauges indicated everything was normal. Below is the combination of codes that I got when I cycled the key... . any ideas??

P0234 - Turbo Over Boost

P0107 - MAP Sensor low

P0480 - Cooling fan 1 control circuit open

P0483 - Cooling fan speed

P0642 - Sensor Reference Voltage 1 Circuit low

I have suspected that the fan was bad for a while as when under load and the temp heats up I don't hear the fan cycling and when in traffic at a stop and the AC is on it stops blowing cold until I start moving again. As for the Turbo over boost and the MAP sensor I have no clue. There are no boxes or programmers on the truck, currently the only upgrade is an ICEBOX intake and Cool Blue Hose. An odd combination that doesn't make sense to me.

Boost sensor is the problem

My son's 04 thru the same codes turned out to be a bad connection at the battery terminal connection worth a check Good Luck Randy

So I took it to the dealership today to let them diagnose so they will order parts. The tech came back to me and indicated that I need to order a new fan drive as they can't tell whether either sensor is bad due to the fact that the wires for the fan are cut. He stated that the fan sensor and the MAP share a "common ground" and until the fan is fixed he can't check the MAP sensor. Sounds like a line of Bull manure to me but I have no other choice at this point. They refuse to order a MAP sensor as that is not the "diagnosed" problem. I indicated that the fan has been non-functional for several months so why did it all the sudden throw codes. The answer "The wires must have sufficiently corroded so as to cause a short. " I call Shenanigans!!!:mad:#@$%!

And of course the fan drive is $330+ dollars and they can't get one in until mid next week! So all in all it was a peachy experience. Of course the dealership and the tech were all very nice to me while they "bent me over the barrel", but that still doesn't mean I enjoyed it!!!

tell them to hook a scanner up and go for a drive, if the boost sensor is bad it will show up. cut the fan wires at the connector and cap them off(you dont need it right) and them if they still wont do anything, ask to purchase a boost sensor.

Dieselpower is right about that. Did they give you a courtesy reach around?

I wish!! At least I might have enjoyed that.

Fan drive is on order. When that shows up I will ask them to take it for a drive and check the boost sensor with a scanner as Dieselpower suggested. If it turns out the boost sensor is bad then I will have them order it and hold off on the fan.

I looked at the fan and what the tech is seeing is there is a sensor that comes up between the fan blades and the front of the engine and the end of that sensor has been cut off leaving exposed wires. So my question is can I just have that sensor replaced or do they have to replace the whole fan drive?

I feel like an idiot here. . I know just enough to be dangerous with all the info I get from the TDR but I don't seem to know enough to be convincing at the dealership and get the tech to listen to me.

Thanks again for all the help guys!

I will keep that in mind if the dealership is unwilling to cooperate. I did call their parts guy last night and spoke with him. He was a little belligerant:-{} to start with when I stated that I would like them to order in the MAP sensor too. He reiterated that the tech said he couldn't diagnose the MAP sensor until the fan was fixed. Eventually I talked him into ordering, stating that if both the fan and MAP sensor are bad I don't want to have to make 2 trips since they have neither part in stock!:-laf

What I am really going to do when it goes in for service is insist that the tech replace the MAP sensor first and then take it for a drive and if the Check Engine Light doesn't come back on then no fan for me!!Oo. :D

Again thanks for all the help Diesel Power! Your advice is MORE than worth the cost of my TDR membership. If I lived a little closer I would certainly bring my truck to you instead of the Dealer!
