This on a 1992 automatic by the way.

Odo quit a while back. Took apart the gauge cluster and the little plastic gears were broken. Replaced both gears, spun the assembly with a pick and everything worked. Put back together but still no odo .

So I took everything apart again assuming I had done something wrong. Rechecked, even made sure the 3 prong connection was tight. Put back together and still no odo :{.

I have a functioning speedo and cruise but no odo or trip. What powers the little electrical motor that spins the gears? Does the VSS have anything to do with the odo? What else could it be if the gears are functioning properly?

Any ideas?

After replacing the gears, I put it together & no odometer.

Took it apart again and then re-assembled it while watching the odo gears mesh, and moving the new gear with a toothpick. This time they did mesh & it worked.

IIRC, I put a little dab of vaseline on the gear to help it mesh.

You have to really study how the cogs go together on the milage counter which is driven by the "trip"odometer (from what I remember) it'll bind up somewere if you dont syncro the slots . I had the gears go bad and bind up and it took me a while to figure out how the whole thing works. .

In my case , reading glasses REALLY helped!:D

Get back in there

Hmmm. I guess I could take it out again. :{I used a dentist tool to reach in there and spin a different gear (can't remember which one but it was inside near the trip lever) and the trip odo started counting again. I'll just have to look at it all closer I guess and see how it all works.

No chance its electrical though? Something has to power that little motor to start the revolution.

Thanks

I had trouble with mine and found that flats were worn and sometimes would work other times would slip, this was in the small gear reduction/increaser that the electrical sensor was on? This was on the side of the transmission on a manual. I don,t remember a cable only an electric sensor. Mike

I got my gears at a pick a part junk yard. Just find a comparable speedo in a truck or SUV around the same vintage. I think as long as you're just changing the reduction gears you may not have to mess around with the alignment of the odometer and trip od cogs. . It's been a while though. . Look real close at those reduction gears there could be just a tiny bit of gear or debrie binding up there also it's a REALLY good idea to take apart the speed sensor wire plugs and clean them. I think the female plug comes apart. I had odometer/cruise controll issues that led me all over the place in the system only to be cured by dissassembling and cleaning the plug on the computer side of the speed sensor at the transmission. . Hard to believe but true... and easy. . Can't hurt... ... .

Thanks. Guess I'll start checking out the VSS & connections down there now.

I got my odo gears from odometergears.com
