Starting the shock discussion... again

I hate to talk bad about a company BUT !

seems these are the two main brake pads everyone is using here. which one is better on rotor life, stopping power, brake dust, and fade. i need replacements and wonder which pad to go with. thanks

Well, as far as I can tell people like em BOTH.

My opinion is that the OEM pads (NOT the Mopar Value line) seem to last SOOOOOO long, with NOOOOOOOOO detrimental effects on rotors or braking or aesthetics (I don't seem to get ANY brake dust), I would not even bother going with anything else, though price may be an issue with some people.

I've got the mopar value line (54. 00) and they seem to be working just like the OEM. I've got about 15k on them and very little dust with no squealing.

I've got 112K on factor pads with lots of life left and the rotor still look great, but I am getting a lot of break dust, mostly up front. That new Armoral stuff works great for keep the break dust off.

Just put on the Hawk LTS pads a few weeks ago and they are great. ZERO noise and no dust yet (little too soon to tell on the dust). I can tell a difference in stopping power compared to the OEM pads, not huge but noticeable. I will buy them again.

This is a little off the subject but the states of WA and CA have signed into law a provision to remove copper and 4-5 other chemicals from disc brake pads by the year 2012 or maybe 2014, can't remember the exact date... .

The law means that any pad sold, or that is installed at the factory must no longer have the mentioned chemicals in it...

From someone who understands friction I can tell you that there is going to be a huge change heading our way... . I personally don't understand how the pad will function. .

What started this was the state of CA has decided in their wisdom that the dust off of disc brake pads is something that is now doing damage to the air we breath as well as making our wheels look dirty... .

I've read the WA bill, and talked to my state senator and was told they just copied CA bill, but couldn't tell me if there were any engineers consulted to see if a disc brake pad can be made and function as designed with the changes... .

Pretty pitiful.

Unreal. With all the fiscal problems here,Ca's worried about poisonous brake dust? What enviro-nut thought this one up? The same guy with fraudalent credentials and junk science that instituted the diesel retro or replace mandate? :{

I put a set of LTS pads on my wifes Grand Cherokee with new rotors. I followed the bed-in procedures that came with the pads and I have to say the rotors look perfect after about 10k miles. My father and I use the Hawk HPS Plus on a street/track car and they are even pretty good to the rotor, lots of dust and some squeal but thats the price for a real aggressive pads.

I just scuffed my stock rotors with an emery cloth since they were smooth when I replaced the pads. The scuff marks are gone and the rotor is back to a perfectly smooth surface. So far so good.

I would never use the value line brakes on my truck again. More dust than a west Texas dust storm. Recently found out from the dealership(mechanic friend) that they do not recommed the value line for 3/4 T diesels and they weren't trying to sell me any others. I also wonder about the Hawk due to the high price of the OEM pads.

My Hawks are Dusty AND noisy at light brake pressure; part of the reason I changed them out to begin with. I even completely disassembled, cleaned, painted, greased and used disc brake quiet, i gave up! My Hawks leave a reddish color dust on my black wheels which is a BEAR to get off!

Thanks for the info. I never had a dust problem with the OEM and they lasted a long time but they sure are proud of them by comparison. I just tried to save a little money and got the "value line". Another example of you get what you pay for I guess.

Which pads? The LTS or the SuperDuty pads?
