hi there,

quick question, haven't been able to find anything in the forums about this...

Basically, is it bad practice to use an oil coated air filter in our engines? I'm running an aFe in the stock box and it is an oil coated filter.

I was told that such an engine will suck th oil off the filter and no longer really be filtering which will inevitably cause low compression and general engine failure.

Is this true? I've been running this setup for about 6 months. Should I change? What would you do? (I'm planning on getting a different air filter, a big one, but can't for a few months... no $$... ) Also, i'm about to clean the element, so if i'm going to change it out, i guess it would be now instead of cleaning... Should I really be worried that my engine could be dusted?

thanks. . :)

I think that K&N is the one to watch out for. AFE seems to know what they are doing, personally I dont like oil coated filters, but thats me.

I still don't know why K&N's take such a beating. I had one in my 98 12v for about 3 years. Many oil analysis and white gloves showed no dirt getting by. Then I listened to all the doomsdayers on this site about K&N and switched to a BHAF. I was not impressed with the BHAF mostly because it rubbed on "stuff" and would get wet from splashin through puddles. So... ... ... ..... I thought I would get an AFE. I did get one a couple of years ago. It was not the proguard 7 but just the regular oiled megacannon. Just cleaned it yesterday and I can tell you it has let WAY MORE DIRT into the intake system then stock, k&n, or BHAF. It was very disheartening to see so much fine dust sticking to the inside of the intake tube with the AFE. I had the outerwear sock over the filter. I am giving this afe filter one more chance and if more dirt is found, I will trash it or sell it on the classifieds to some AFE cheerleader! By the way the AFE that I just cleaned was the factory oiled one so it was not my fault! I am hoping that after a couple of years the oil dried up a little and that is why the dirt was getting by. Reason for only cleaning once in a couple of years..... Got my 04. 5 and never drove the 98 12v for 20 months.

And to answer the original question, I don't think a PROPERLY oiled air filter will get oil in the intake system or let dirt by. An improperly oiled one will let in dirt in from not enough oil. Over oiling the filter will get oil into the intake system. Pick your poison..... I would rather see oil in my intake than dust, but idealy you want nothing! LOL

hmm. . OK. Looks like I might want to start saving the pennies to get off the oil based filter. Any recommendations for that? Wildmanben, do you like your amsoil air filter? How long have you used it in your truck?

I would not base your decision on my post! LOL The AFE Proguard 7 is supposed to be pretty good. The oiled ones just need a lot more attention and proper cleaning and re-oiling. There are a ton of other filter manufactures out there using the oil with good results. Care and maintenance..... Care and maintenance.

Amsoil filter info... . I am not a dealer!

Been using an aFe ProGard 7 for 3 years now, no problems. My intake pipe stays clean and oil free, even after several cleanings and re-oiling. Just follow the directions and you'll be ok.
