I'd love to hear comments from those of you who do oil analysis.

At the end of May my wife and I took off in the truck on our honeymoon down through Canada, Washington, Oregon, California, and then back up through Nevada, Idaho, and again through Oregon, Washington and Canada back to Anchorage. The main stops were:

Surrey, BC (Piers' shop! :D)

Vancouver, BC

Victoria (Vancouver Island)

Los Angeles, CA

Los Vegas, NV

Reno, NV

American Falls, ID

We ended up with 9,871 miles on that trip, from 5/28 to 6/28. As soon as we got back I changed the oil and sent a sample to Blackstone. I was a little worried, because I typically change my oil at around 4 or 5 thousand miles, and I wasn't sure it'd be a pretty picture with almost 10,000 miles on it. I was more than a little surprised though--check it out and let me know what you think:

Mike,

First off, congratulations on your marriage and honeymoon.

The results of your oil analysis look very good from what I can see. However, there is no Viscosity or (TAN) Total Acid Number,(TBN) Total Base Number given. Do you know what these are?

Also the Magnesium and Barium numbers are low from what I am used to seeing. Of course most of the oil analysis reports that I see are synthetic oils. Magnesium and boron are additives in the oil.

Best regards,

Wayne

Good numbers. I compared them to my Monitor analysis report (had 3200 miles on oil) and they were close.

I would like to find a listing of maximum amounts for these data points. Without the maximum amounts (or common parameters) I don't have anything to judge against.

Does anyone have a listing to show the max amounts for the oil analysis report?

Thanks much... .....

Oil Analysis looks very good. As a former Chevron Lube Engineer, the additive package is in good shape (magnesium and barium are not used / needed in the Chevron Delo 400 Additive package). Where do you get your oil anlaysis done? Viscosity and TBN/TAN would be interesting.

Glad *I'm* not the ONLY one here who is reading-impaired... ;) :D :D

I've been using Blackstone. Unfortunately I didn't think to have them do a TBN on it. It's just an extra $3, but I just never even thought about it. I don't remember seeing an option for TAN.

I updated that page above with the properties (viscosity, flashpoint, etc. ) They said viscosity should be between 69-82, and it was 76. 4.

19Kgvw, I've never seen anything like a table showing max limits of wear metals, etc, but Blackstone does include what they call "Universal Averages"--basically the average of similar samples that other people have sent in to compare against. I've also updated that page to include the universal averages from my printout.

Thanks Mike, that is helpful.

All mine are in the ball park except the "additive metals".

calcium is 3414

phosphorus is 1662

zinc is 1401

I run the Stynadyne fuel additive. Would you know if these higher numbers would come from what I add or the fuel company during the processing of the crude?

I've gotten mine done through Fleetguard Monitor fluid analysis.

Go to www.fleetguard.com and you can get to the analysis page from there. Also, you can call 1-800-22filter. I ordered my analysis "kit" from Geno's. The kit gives you everything you need.
